Blood Bank Technologist

Scope of Position

The Blood Bank Technologist prepares blood components for transfusion. Preparation includes receiving blood products from outside sources, thawing FFP/ Cryoprecipitate, and allocating blood products for transfusions. Technologists process specimens: entering test results, ABO/RH typing, crossmatching, antibody screening and identification. The technologist also handles telephone inquiries regarding specimens, test results, and product availability. They are responsible for issuing blood and blood products for patient transfusion. Staff must maintain patient files, receive and distribute supplies within the department. This complex transfusion service serves a diverse patient population. The department is staffed 24 hours per day, seven days a week.

Position Summary

The Blood Bank Technologist processes patient specimens including ABO/RH typing, crossmatching, antibody screen/identification. Handles phone inquiries regarding patient results, specimen collection, and product availability. Will participate in quality control, quality assurance, and general laboratory duties such as filing and data entry. Other duties and projects will be assigned on an as needed basis.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology/Med Lab Science or biological science degree, with MT/MLS certification. If not certified, applicant must obtain MLS certification within one year of hire, with first board of certification test attempt within the first six months of hire.

Final candidates are subject to successful completion of a background check. A drug screen or physical may be required during the post‑offer process.
