Campus HVAC Technician II: BAS & Energy Systems

Overview Cleveland State University – Engaged Learning HVAC Tech 1 and HVAC Tech 2 are entry-level to mid-level positions responsible for installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems on campus. The technician will perform routine service checks, troubleshoot basic HVAC issues, and help ensure systems run efficiently to maintain a comfortable and safe environment. Roles operate under the direction of senior HVAC personnel with on-the-job training to develop deeper HVAC knowledge. Responsibilities include inspecting HVAC units, replacing filters, cleaning coils, monitoring system performance, and assisting with emergency repairs as needed. Responsibilities HVAC Tech 1: Perform installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of campus HVAC systems. Conduct preventive maintenance, troubleshoot basic malfunctions, and collaborate with maintenance personnel to address HVAC-related issues. Inspect units, replace filters, clean coils, monitor performance, and assist with emergency repairs. HVAC Tech 2: Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair campus HVAC systems. Ensure operation efficiency and reliability, perform preventive maintenance, troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, and collaborate with other maintenance staff. Minimum Qualifications HVAC Tech 1 High school diploma, GED or state-recognized equivalent. Completion of an accredited HVAC certificate or apprenticeship HVAC program or HVAC vocational training. EPA Section 608 Technician Certification – Universal or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire. Ability to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds. If lifting exceeds fifty (50) pounds, buddy lift or use of tools to aid lifting. Ability to climb and work from ladders, scaffolding, catwalks, and various aerial lifts exceeding twenty-five (25) feet. Valid driver’s license and eligibility under CSU Driving and Motor Vehicle Policy. HVAC Tech 2 High school diploma, GED or state-recognized equivalent. Completion of an accredited HVAC certificate or apprenticeship HVAC program. Asbestos Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Certification, Confined Space Certification, and Fall Protection Certification or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire. EPA Section 608 Technician Certification – Universal. Two (2) years of HVAC experience from an industrial contractor or institutional complex. Experience with building automation systems (BAS) and energy management systems (EMS). Ability to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds. If lifting exceeds fifty (50) pounds, buddy lift or use of tools to aid lifting. Ability to climb and work from ladders, scaffolding, catwalks, and various aerial lifts exceeding twenty-five (25) feet. Valid driver’s license and eligibility under CSU Driving and Motor Vehicle Policy. Preferred Qualifications HVAC Tech 1: Verifiable completion of training courses in International Mechanical Code (IMC), HVAC and refrigerant safety, installation, repair and maintenance (e.g., OSHA Safety). OSHA or other workplace safety certifications. Experience with building automation systems (BAS) and energy management systems (EMS). Asbestos O&M Certification, Confined Space Certification, and Fall Protection Certification or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire. HVAC experience from a commercial contractor or institutional complex. HVAC Tech 2: Verifiable completion of IMC, HVAC and refrigerant safety, installation, repair and maintenance (e.g., OSHA Safety). OSHA or other workplace safety certifications. State of Ohio Boiler Operator, Stationary Steam Engineer License, or state-recognized equivalent. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) HVAC Tech 1: Proficiency in troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining HVAC, refrigeration, and control systems. Knowledge of building, maintenance, and safety codes and standards (e.g., OBC, OMC, OPC, OSHA, ASHRAE, EPA refrigerant handling). Knowledge of metering and measuring tools for HVAC/refrigeration troubleshooting. Knowledge of new and repair techniques for building infrastructure. Effective verbal and written communication; able to work independently or as part of a team. Dependability and punctuality; high standards of safety and quality. Ability to use hand and power tools safely and effectively. Proficiency with digital and mobile maintenance work order systems, email, and messaging. HVAC Tech 2: Advanced troubleshooting of complex HVAC, refrigeration, and control systems. Strong understanding of local, state, and national building codes and standards (e.g., OBC, OMC, OPC, OSHA, ASHRAE, EPA refrigerant handling). Proficiency with BAS/EMS tools; ability to perform field calculations for HVAC equipment, read drawings and schematics, and interpret technical documents. Ability to optimize campus energy consumption; lead electrical projects from start to finish with safety and quality in mind. Effective verbal and written communication; dependable and punctual. Proficiency with digital and mobile maintenance tools and systems.
