Shop Supervisor

We are seeking a motivated Shop Supervisor with strong structural steel fabrication experience to lead production operations in a busy steel fabrication facility. In this role, you supervise and coordinate the work of precision workers, machine operators, welders, fitters, fabricators, and material handlers while driving safety, quality, and efficiency. You serve as a subject matter expert on shop fabrication processes, develop and deliver training for new hires, and work closely with leadership to improve production methods, equipment performance, and overall product quality.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of production and operating workers, including precision workers, machine operators, welders, fitters, fabricators, and material handlers.
• Ensure all shop fabrication work follows safety standards, company policies, procedures, and quality requirements.
• Review and interpret specifications, blueprints, job orders, and related documentation to provide clear direction to workers.
• Recommend and implement measures to motivate employees and improve production methods, equipment performance, and product quality.
• Evaluate employee performance and provide objective feedback and recommendations to management.
• Design, develop, and deliver training programs for new hires across multiple positions and skill sets in the shop.
• Create clear, objective evaluation reports that measure performance during the training period.
• Closely monitor and supervise trainees, effectively teaching fundamentals and foundational skills of shop fabrication.
• Communicate clearly and effectively with new employees to ensure training content is easily understood and applied.
• Evaluate training programs on a consistent basis and make recommendations for continuous improvement.
• Serve as a subject matter expert in all areas of the shop, providing technical guidance on structural steel fabrication, welding, and fitting.
• Lead by example in safety, quality, and productivity, fostering a culture of accountability and teamwork.
• Coordinate production schedules and workflow to meet deadlines and optimize shop efficiency.
• Support quality control efforts by ensuring adherence to structural steel QC requirements and print specifications.

Essential Skills

• Minimum 57 years of experience in commercial structural steel fabrication.
• Strong technical steel and welding expertise, including experience with the GMAW welding process.
• Proficiency in fitting steel and working with structural steel components.
• In-depth knowledge of all aspects of steel fabrication with a focus on process improvement and efficiency.
• Ability to effectively train fitters and welders in shop practices, safety, and quality standards.
• Strong management and leadership skills, including supervision and team coordination.
• Expert-level ability to read and interpret blueprints, detail drawings, specifications, and general notes.
• Strong knowledge of quality control requirements for structural steel fabrication.
• Demonstrated production management skills within an industrial or fabrication environment.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with employees at all levels.
• Capability to serve as a subject matter expert in shop operations and fabrication processes.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience supervising production teams in an industrial or structural steel environment.
• Experience in training and developing workers across multiple positions and skill sets.
• Mastery of blueprint reading and specification interpretation for complex structural steel projects.
• Experience with CNC equipment and its role in structural steel production.
• Proven ability to implement process improvements that enhance productivity and product quality.
• Strong organizational skills for managing workflows, priorities, and documentation.
• Comfort working in both indoor and outdoor shop environments in a large production facility.

Work Environment

This role is based in a large structural steel production facility in El Mirage, AZ, with work performed both inside the shop and outside in the yard as needed. The facility uses swamp coolers and fans to provide a somewhat climate-controlled environment and is organized, with new production lines being added to support growth and efficiency. You work closely with welders, fitters, machine operators, and material handlers in a busy industrial setting that emphasizes safety and productivity. The environment is hands-on and shop-focused, where appropriate work attire and protective footwear are expected, supported by a boot voucher program and practical gear such as camelbacks in the summer.

This is a Permanent position based out of El Mirage, AZ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $33.00/hr.
