Duties

The Medical Support Assistant (Advanced) provides specialized and expert administrative patient support while working collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model. Work involves specialized administrative judgment and the flexible use of a wide range of clinical flow processes relating to access to care across multiple clinics, specialties, and/or Community Care resources. Recommends changes to existing clinic procedures based on current administrative guidelines. Duties include but are not limited to:

• AMSAs at this level develop and/or maintain effective and efficient communication with the patient, interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model teams, VA medical centers, and other agencies.
• Assist with communications during the inpatient to outpatient discharge.
• Communicate with non-VA medical facilities.
• Creates authorization for payment of community care in the Healthshare Referral Manager (HSRM) or alternative software with pertinent information including the community provider's name, address, category of care, referral number, number of visits, purpose of visit, and length of authorization.
• Provides administrative support to ensure all pertinent information is transmitted to appropriate parties for community care that is authorized under any other funding sources.
• Electronically uploads all pertinent clinical and administrative data into HSRM. Maintains awareness and proficiency in all web-based application to include, PPMS, CTM and third-party administrator portal.
• Serves as an administrative point of contact in the request, coordination, and authorization for community care consults.
• Works collaboratively with Registered Nurse Care Coordinators, Program Analyst, and other VA Staff and Community Care providers.
• Receives, handles, and transfer calls appropriately with regard to telephone inquires from numerous sources including patients, other VA staff, and community providers concerning items including but not limited to; authorization terms, appointment status and billing/claims status.
• Prepares correspondence to be sent to community care providers that includes details about the terms of the authorization, the appointment date and time, and all pertinent clinical data as instructed by the RN.

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

Telework: This position is eligible for situational (ad hoc) telework only. The selectee is required to report to the official duty station each scheduled workday. Telework may be approved only on a case-by-case basis with supervisory approval. Routine or recurring telework is not authorized.
