Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN General)

Administers nursing care within scope of practice under the direction of a registered nurse or licensed physician. Administers oxygen, applies sterile dressings, inserts catheters, reinserts gastrotomy tubes, suctions, irrigates wounds, gives enemas, and collects specimens. Performs dialysis treatments, operates hemodialysis equipment, and monitors patients during procedures. Assists in emergencies by administering first aid, performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, and restraining patients. Administers controlled drugs and non-controlled medication in oral, rectal, topical, or injectable form. Provides medication instructions to patients. Maintains medication accountability records and observes, documents, and reports patient conditions. Prepares and maintains related reports and records, including unusual incident reports and medication reports. Provides general nursing care and assists with daily living activities. Takes patient vital signs, assists with personal grooming and hygiene, and repositions patients as needed. Responds to patient alarms and makes medical appointments. Orders medication and medical supplies, cleans nurse's station, and performs clerical tasks. Provides work direction, orientation, and training to lower-level direct care staff. Attends and participates in various meetings and in-service training programs as assigned. Demonstrates skill in the use of medical equipment and operation of a personal computer. Develops rapport with patients and understands manuals and verbal instructions associated with practical nursing. Recognizes unusual or threatening conditions and takes appropriate emergency action. Demonstrates the strength to move, reposition, or restrain patients.
