Position: Special Education Paraeducator

Responsibilities:
- Support the implementation of student plans and instructional programs
- Work closely with students, teachers, nurses, and other staff
- Assist individual students and small groups as directed by the classroom teacher
- Help maintain a safe, structured, and caring learning environment
- Respond appropriately in behavioral situations
- Collect and maintain student records and data
- Support students in classrooms and community-based learning environments
- Maintain confidentiality of student information and records
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Must meet applicable federal and State of Connecticut requirements for paraeducators
- For positions subject to Title I requirements, candidates must also meet one of the following: Completed two years of study at an institution of higher education; or Earned an Associate's degree or higher; or Achieved the required passing score on a Connecticut State Board of Education-approved paraeducator assessment
- Experience working with students with disabilities and/or behavioral support needs is preferred but not required
- Ability to build positive, supportive relationships with students
- Strong communication, teamwork, and collaboration skills
- Ability to follow student Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), behavior support plans, instructional programs, and staff direction
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise good judgment when working with students and families
- Flexibility and willingness to support students with a variety of academic, behavioral, physical, and personal care needs
- Basic computer skills, including email and student data systems
- Must successfully complete all required pre-employment background checks and fingerprinting
- Must complete all required district and state training within established timelines
Physical Requirements:
- This position may include lifting, assisting, and supporting students with a variety of physical, behavioral, and personal care needs
- Candidates should be able to move throughout the school day, lift up to 25 pounds or more, and respond appropriately in emergency or behavioral situations
Schedule:
- 10-month 181 work days per year
- 6.5 paid hours per day; schedule approximately 8:15 a.m.3:15 p.m., including a 30-minute unpaid lunch
Salary and Benefits:
- Salary: $24.76/hour - Step 1 of the AFSCME Local 1303-266 Agreement
- Health and dental insurance offered
- Paid holidays
- Additional benefits available under the Local 1303-266 Agreement
