Museum Specialist (Anthropology/Conservator) Employer: Smithsonian Institution Summary The Smithsonian Institution is a diverse museum and research complex dedicated to the increase and diffusion of knowledge. The National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) promotes understanding of the natural world and our place in it, and the NMNH Anthropology Department is the largest of the museum’s departments featuring three divisions and several outreach programs. Location & Status Location: Washington, DC Open date: 09/30/2022 Closed date: 10/14/2022 (Position closed) Duties Participate in setting long- and short-term goals, plans, and projects for conservation, considering exhibition, loan requests, research and other programs of the department. Provide advice and assistance concerning the proper storage, monitoring, mounting, display, and repair of borrowed items, thereby affecting the preservation of a wide variety of valuable items. Assist with developing conservation guidelines and participate with teams involved with collections regarding collections issues. Advise departmental administration on department-wide collections preservation issues. Requirements Pass pre-employment background investigation. May need to complete a probationary period. Qualifications Basic Qualifications: Experience related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects, including collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation, or other related experience. Most positions require a particular subject-matter specialization (e.g., anthropology, biology, geology, etc.). Additional Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS‑11 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. Specialized experience is defined as applying knowledge of conservation and museum practices to conserve anthropological, biological, geological, and archival items; providing specifications for exhibits; determining the condition of materials and developing treatment plans; performing conservation treatment; mold and pest remediation; creating specialized housing; advising on display or lighting requirements; and digitally documenting the process. Volunteer experience from National Service programs and other organizations may be credited toward required experience. Education: No formal education qualification requirement. Compensation & Benefits Salary: $89,834 – $116,788 per year. Pay scale & grade: GS‑12. Promotion potential: GS‑13.
