Legal Instrument Examiner

Job Summary This position is located in the Central Detention Facility (CDF) at 1901 D Street, SE Washington, DC, within the District of Columbia Department of Corrections (DOC) Records Office. The role provides administrative and other support primarily related to the review, examination and verification of legal instruments and supporting documentation, ensuring detainee and inmate commitments comply with governing legal statutes and correctional policies. Responsibilities Receives, examines, and verifies commitment documents on inmates committed to DOC, maintaining appropriate record‑keeping functions and supporting standard and nonstandard transactions/processes. Initiates record checks and secures related law‑enforcement and court documents as required. Reviews prior correspondence and documentation to assess relevance to requested transactions. Computes short‑term sentences and receives extensive developmental training for more difficult non‑standard sentences. Prepares and provides detailed correspondence from the records office to law‑enforcement agencies, courts, and other entities as relevant. Interviews inmates to clarify matters such as their sentence and court orders. Provides statistical and narrative inmate information for inter‑agency use in accordance with established guidelines and protocols. Compares accumulated information with pertinent records and legal requirements to resolve issues. Transmits data from legal documents (case numbers, charges, sentencing dates) from databases such as JACCS, Wales/NCIC, and Court View, and compiles information for other agencies and inquiries. Qualifications and Education Specialized Experience: At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression. Licenses and Certifications: None. Working Conditions / Environment The work is generally performed in an office setting, but the incumbent may need to meet with inmates within the housing unit. Tour of duty: 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. Essential Position Designation: Classified as an essential/emergency position under the provisions of the District Personnel Manual Chapter 12. Residency Requirement: Applicants with “Residency Preference” must maintain residency in the District of Columbia for a minimum of seven (7) years.
