Poultry Veterinarian and Outreach Specialist

Position Overview The Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine in the College of Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University is seeking a 12-month Clinical Assistant or Clinical Associate Professor. The primary responsibilities will be to teach poultry and preventive medicine within veterinary and graduate school curricula and to lead outreach efforts in support of Ohio’s poultry producers and veterinarians. Faculty effort is anticipated to be approximately evenly divided between teaching and outreach, with smaller portions devoted to scholarly activity and professional service. The focus remains predominantly on teaching and outreach, although opportunities for developing clinical or consultative services may arise. Teaching Responsibilities Teach poultry health and production topics within the preclinical and clinical DVM curriculum. Deliver courses on animal welfare, food safety, infectious diseases, and other aspects of veterinary preventive medicine, tailored to the candidate’s strengths. Mentor graduate and veterinary students to foster interest in poultry veterinary medicine. Outreach Responsibilities Build relationships among poultry veterinarians, regulatory agencies, and the academic community. Develop, deliver, and evaluate outreach programs that provide science‑based, prevention‑focused information to producers across Ohio. Coordinate on‑farm assessments and diagnostic support for poultry health concerns throughout Ohio. Engage with small and mid‑sized producers and integrate outreach with teaching expectations. Support poultry health and disease prevention through partnerships with producers, private practitioners, diagnostic laboratories, and regulatory agencies. Performance Objectives Deliver high‑quality instruction in poultry health, production systems, and preventive medicine for veterinary and graduate students. Lead statewide outreach that provides timely, science‑based guidance to poultry producers and veterinarians. Mentor graduate and veterinary students to ignite interest in poultry veterinary medicine. Build and maintain strong partnerships with stakeholders across the poultry sector. Conduct on‑farm assessments and coordinate diagnostic support to address poultry health concerns. Contribute to applied and collaborative research aligned with department priorities and the Protect OHIO initiative. Establish trusted relationships with small and midsized producers that integrate with outreach and teaching expectations. Education and Experience Requirements Required: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (or equivalent) degree Strong communication skills Relevant experience working with poultry systems as a veterinarian Desired: Advanced degree and/or training (e.g., MS, MPH, PhD, residency program) Eligibility to practice veterinary medicine in Ohio Prior experience teaching students Familiarity with food animal production systems in North American contexts Board certification in a relevant veterinary specialty (e.g., ACPV, ACVPM) Prior experience delivering education/training to veterinarians and/or producers Experience working with producers, industry, and stakeholder groups, with evidence of successfully meeting goals and collaborative outputs Bilingual (Spanish) Benefits The offer will be based on internal equity and the candidate’s qualifications.
