As an Emergency Dispatcher with the Wichita State University Police Department, you'll be that voice. Job Summary Transmits and receives law enforcement and public safety staff communications in accordance with government regulations. Monitors, documents and reports all activities as required. Communicates information and services with general public. Essential Functions Answers incoming communications for all emergency and non-emergency calls, and maintains control of conversations prior to emergency response team arrival. Determines appropriate level of emergency response services based on available information and applicable laws and regulations. Communicates general law enforcement information, University policies, parking regulations, weather conditions, and public record releases. Transmits or communicates information to appropriate emergency staff, agencies and communication systems utilizing appropriate terms and effective response techniques. Acts as emergency information and security backup according to required regulations. Maintains accurate law enforcement records, incident documentation, and officer location and activity status in accordance with federal, state and local laws, regulations, and University policy. Receives and responds to emergency communications during and after disaster incidents and other extreme conditions. Monitors and efficiently responds to security alarms and other emergency notifications. Receives and relays requests for emergency repairs and maintenance utilizing appropriate resources. Processes law enforcement requests to check for warrants, driver status, previous convictions and criminal history. Required Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent Required License/Certifications/Training Kansas Criminal Justice Information System (KCJIS) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certifications within six (6) months of hire date U.S. citizen Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of emergency communications and public safety dispatching principles and practices. Knowledge of telecommunications equipment, computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems, and radio communication procedures. Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures related to emergency response and public safety communications. Knowledge of geographic locations, buildings, streets, and landmarks on and around the Wichita State University campus. Knowledge of emergency medical, fire, and law enforcement response protocols. Knowledge of records management, data entry, and information security requirements. Knowledge of customer service principles and techniques. Excellent verbal communication and active listening skills. Strong interpersonal and customer service skills when interacting with students, faculty, staff, visitors, and emergency responders. Skilled in operating multi-line telephone systems, radio systems, computers, and dispatch software. Effective decision-making and problem-solving skills in high-pressure situations. Strong organizational and multitasking skills with the ability to manage multiple incidents simultaneously. Accurate data entry and information processing skills. Time management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment. Ability to maintain professionalism, composure, and courtesy during stressful or emotional situations. Ability to remain calm, focused, and effective during emergencies and critical incidents. Ability to obtain, evaluate, and relay critical information quickly and accurately. Ability to make sound judgments and take appropriate action in accordance with established procedures. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely by telephone, radio, and in writing. Ability to monitor multiple communication channels and information systems simultaneously. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with law enforcement personnel, emergency responders, university departments, and the public. Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, and emergency response protocols. Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required. Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations and priorities. Ability to accurately document events and maintain detailed records under time-sensitive conditions. Preferred Qualifications Experience working in an emergency dispatching or first responder environment. Experience handling sensitive information Experience with radio and CAD (computer aided dispatching) operations Experience with security camera operation Preferred License/Certifications/Training Valid Driver's License Physical Requirements Ability to remain in a stationary position. Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment including but not limited to phone, printers, copiers, and calculators. Ability to communicate with others and accurately exchange information. Additional Physical Requirement Sedentary: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or an negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
