High School Special Education Teacher

Henry Ford Academy is seeking a High School Special Education Teacher. In this role, you will facilitate engaging, immersive learning experiences for students of diverse backgrounds and proficiency levels. The teacher is responsible for providing high-quality instruction that promotes student achievement, critical thinking, and college and career readiness. The teacher develops engaging lesson plans aligned with state standards, monitors student progress, and collaborates with staff, families, and the school community to support student success.

Key Responsibilities

• Instruction/Curriculum/Assessment
• Provides research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student's IEP
• Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques
• Employs various teaching techniques, strategies, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals
• Develops and implements annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals
• Works cooperatively with child study team members and others in developing instructional goals and strategies
• Creates a positive learning experience with emphasis in individualized instruction using appropriate sources including technology and/or assistive technology
• Serves as primary contact for the parent
• Conducts special education evaluations and reevaluations
• Provides direction, supervision and evaluation of educational assistants as directed
• Employs and implements a classroom structure and consistency to encourage student responsibility, cooperation and mutual respect consistent with district policies and procedures
• Collaborates and consults with educational professionals and community service providers (i.e., social services, public health, medical providers etc.) regarding the needs of students
• Provides consultation to classroom teachers regarding classroom accommodations, instructional modifications, adaptive equipment, behavior modification plans and other similar instructional interventions to meet the needs of students with disabilities
• Classroom Management
• Establish and maintain a safe, respectful, and productive classroom environment
• Implement school policies, procedures, and student discipline expectations consistently
• Foster positive relationships with students that support academic and social-emotional growth
• Promote student engagement, responsibility, and accountability
• Communication and Collaboration
• Maintain regular communication with parents/guardians regarding student progress and concerns
• Collaborate with colleagues, counselors, administrators, and support staff to meet student needs
• Participate in parent-teacher conferences, staff meetings, and school events
• Support school-wide initiatives and programs
• Professional Responsibilities
• Participate in professional development activities and continuous learning opportunities
• Maintain compliance with state, federal, and school policies and regulations
• Fulfill supervisory duties as assigned, including hall, lunch, arrival, dismissal, and extracurricular supervision
• Serve as a positive role model for students and the school community
• Perform other duties as assigned by administration

Qualifications

• Education/Experience Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education or related field. Valid teaching certificate/license required. Appropriate subject-area endorsement(s) required. Previous teaching experience preferred. Experience working with high school students is preferred.
• Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of special education and endorsed/specialty area Knowledge and skills in working with children with various disabilities Ability to effectively engage and motivate students. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to use educational technology and learning management systems. Ability to work collaboratively with students, families, and staff. Proven experience teaching students at various proficiency levels Desire to work with high school students and staff from diverse backgrounds. Experience working with students in individual and group settings. Ability to communicate at various levels with students, parents, staff, and volunteers. Ability to work as part of a team in a public school academy that includes teachers, teacher interns, administrators, support staff and volunteers. Self-motivated, multi-tasking ability; able to stay focused in a distracting, noisy environment; ability to work with people in a positive manner; able to keep sensitive information confidential; ability to respond effectively and maintain a calm environment in emergencies.

Work Environment, Conditions and Benefits

The duty period is 8:00am to 4:00pm during typical school days. The Special Education Teacher may also be present from 4:00-5:00pm on scheduled school meetings days.

Schedule and Compensation Salary for the Special Education Teacher, based on experience and credentials, and considering the available school budget. Schedule: Full-time - Regular School Day 8:00am-4:00pm Benefits: Depending on full/part time status and hours worked
