Summer Instructor, Math, TRIO Upward Bound Program Location: Lynn, MA Job Type: Part-time Work Schedule July 1: Staff Training July 2 – July 16: Day Program, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM July 18 – August 8: Residential Program, UMass Amherst August 10: NSCC – Wrapping up paperwork and program materials Salary Total earnings for this position are $4,368 at $36.55 per hour plus room and board during the residential portion. About the Program The North Shore Community College (NSCC) TRIO Upward Bound (UB) Program is a federally funded initiative designed to support low‑income, first‑generation, and academically at‑risk high school students. The program offers academic enrichment and extracurricular activities throughout the academic year and summer, including instruction, tutoring, college tours, cultural events, health and fitness activities, workshops, and service projects. Summer Academy The UB Summer Academy is a six‑week program that simulates commuter and residential college experiences for approximately 40 students from Lynn Public Schools. This year’s Academy includes a four‑week day program at NSCC Lynn and a two‑week residential program at UMass Amherst, running Monday‑Friday 8:00 AM‑4:00 PM for the day component and Sunday evening‑Saturday afternoon for the residential component. The overarching theme is “Starfleet Academy.” General Statement of Duties The Summer Instructor is responsible for planning and implementing dynamic, engaging, project‑based courses that align with the UB program’s goals and the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Responsibilities Attend staff training, daily/weekly staff meetings, and end‑of‑program activities. Design curriculum that supports the program’s teaching goals and yearly theme. Implement a virtual assessment system to gauge student success in assignments, projects, participation, and overall course outcomes. Identify virtual educational resources (books, articles, supplies, etc.) for use in the course. Incorporate culturally responsive pedagogy, student‑centered learning, and multicultural perspectives. Focus on one overarching project guiding content and skills, presented on the final day. Collaborate with the Academic Coordinator to maximize academic benefits for each student. Engage in non‑instructional virtual activities, including weekly meetings, study sessions, and co‑curricular events. Job Requirements Bachelor’s degree in the related field(s) required. Familiarity with assessment techniques in the subject area(s). Teaching experience, preferably with urban youth. Knowledge of Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.
