Overview The United States Attorney's Office prosecutes federal criminal offenses, seeks recovery of government funds fraudulently obtained, litigates affirmative civil fraud and enforcement actions, and defends the U.S. Government's interest in civil cases. In addition to the main office in downtown Atlanta, we maintain three intermittently staffed offices located in Rome, Newnan, and Gainesville. This position is located in Atlanta, GA. Additional positions may be filled using this announcement. Responsibilities One or more Assistant U.S. Attorneys to represent the United States in affirmative civil enforcement matters. One or more Assistant U.S. Attorneys to represent the United States in civil defensive matters. One or more Assistant U.S. Attorneys to represent the United States in immigration matters. Civil AUSAs have the privilege of standing in Court and stating that they represent the United States of America. The selected Civil AUSA will handle a wide range of civil litigation, including defensive litigation and affirmative civil enforcement on behalf of government agencies located in the district. The selected Civil AUSA will exercise autonomy and gain firsthand litigation experience in representing the United States, including handling depositions, motion practice, hearings, mediations, trials, and appeals. Civil AUSAs develop litigation strategies for their own cases with support from supervisors and experienced Assistant U.S. Attorneys. Defensive Litigation: Defending the United States and its agencies against a broad array of civil cases, including employment discrimination claims under federal statutes; personal injury and medical malpractice claims arising from treatment at federally funded facilities under the Federal Tort Claims Act; challenges to agency determinations under the Administrative Procedure Act; and FOIA/Privacy Act request disclosures. AUSAs handle their own cases and must manage multiple ongoing matters and deadlines. Affirmative Civil Enforcement Litigation: ACE matters involve investigation and litigation of fraud, waste, and abuse where federal agencies and taxpayers are the victims. Cases are often under the False Claims Act and may involve health care, financial, procurement, mortgage, grant, and contractor fraud. Many cases involve parallel criminal proceedings requiring coordination between civil and criminal AUSAs. Most cases involve substantial monetary claims and require initiative, organization, and strong documentary review skills. Immigration Litigation: Handling affirmative and defensive matters, including challenges to agency decisions under the Administrative Procedure Act, defending mandamus actions regarding immigration benefits, and prosecuting civil denaturalization proceedings based on fraud. Familiarity with immigration law is helpful but not required. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex with training and experience. Requirements and Qualifications Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit, and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable background investigation. Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which they are appointed or within 25 miles thereof. 545 for district-specific information. Selective Service: If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, you must certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt. Requirements: You must have a J.D. degree and be an active member of the bar of any U.S. jurisdiction. You must become a member of the Georgia bar within 18 months of appointment. You must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. Qualifications: Required Qualifications: J.D. degree (or equivalent), active bar membership in good standing in any U.S. jurisdiction, and at least 1 year of post-J.D. or equivalent legal or relevant experience. United States citizenship is required. Preferred Qualifications: 3 years of post-JD experience (or equivalent) and strong legal writing and research abilities, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to handle voluminous discovery, challenging witnesses, and deadlines. Commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, and public service is valued. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Education: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree. Compensation and Benefits Salary: Pay for Assistant United States Attorneys is determined in part by years of professional attorney experience. The range for non-supervisory AUSA is $81,160 to $197,100, including locality pay.
