Alaska Clean Seas (ACS) is a non-profit, incorporated oil spill response cooperative whose current membership includes oil and pipeline companies that engage in or intend to undertake oil and gas exploration, development, production and/or pipeline transport activities on the North Slope of Alaska.

The Alaska Clean Seas Operations Department is looking to fill the Marine Mechanic position at West Dock located in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. This position is open to both internal and external applicants.

All qualified and interested applicants must complete the requirements of this posting prior to 5pm on the closing date of July 24, 2026.

Position Summary  

The Marine Mechanic is responsible for maintaining the operational readiness, reliability, and safety of Alaska Clean Seas’ fleet of vessels, trailers, and specialized oil spill response equipment. This position performs preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, repairs, testing, and modifications on a wide variety of marine propulsion systems, mechanical equipment, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and support equipment. 

The Marine Mechanic plays a critical role in ensuring ACS maintains a constant state of response readiness to support member contingency plans and emergency spill response operations throughout Alaska’s North Slope. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, repair, and overhaul of ACS vessels, marine engines, propulsion systems, steering systems, trailers, and associated equipment. 
  • Maintain gasoline and diesel engines, lower units, jet drives, fuel systems, cooling systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and mechanical components. 
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair specialized spill response equipment, including pumps, skimmers, hydraulic power units, generators, boom deployment systems, portable tanks, trailers, winches, lighting systems, and related equipment. 
  • Conduct routine inspections to ensure all vessels and response equipment remain mission ready. 
  • Diagnose equipment failures using technical manuals, diagnostic software, schematics, and testing equipment. 
  • Complete repairs in accordance with manufacturer specifications and established ACS maintenance standards. 
  • Perform sea trials, operational testing, and equipment acceptance testing following maintenance and repairs. 
  • Assist with vessel launches, recoveries, transport, and seasonal equipment preparation. 
  • Fabricate, modify, and install mechanical components and equipment as needed to improve operational capability and reliability. 
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, work orders, and equipment history in the maintenance management system. 
  • Assist with inventory management, parts procurement, and maintenance planning. 
  • Support spill response drills, exercises, training events, and actual emergency response operations. 
  • Operate forklifts, cranes, loaders, and other equipment as authorized. 
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications  

  • High school diploma or GED. 
  • Successful completion of an accredited marine mechanic, diesel mechanic, or heavy equipment mechanic vocational or technical training program; possession of a recognized marine mechanic certification; or equivalent formal training in marine engineering, diesel mechanics, or related mechanical systems. 
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience maintaining and repairing marine vessels, marine propulsion systems, diesel and gasoline engines, or heavy mechanical equipment. An equivalent combination of education, military training, certifications, and experience may be considered. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of marine propulsion systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, fuel systems, steering systems, trailers, and general mechanical systems. 
  • Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on a broad range of marine and mechanical equipment. 
  • Ability to read and interpret service manuals, electrical diagrams, hydraulic schematics, and technical drawings. 
  • Proficiency using diagnostic equipment and common mechanical tools. 
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. 
  • Ability to obtain and maintain all required ACS qualifications. 

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Current manufacturer certifications from Yamaha, Mercury, Honda, Suzuki, Cummins, Lugger, Caterpillar, or similar manufacturers. 
  • Welding and metal fabrication experience. American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welder or American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) qualified welder. 
  • American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) certification 
  • International Fluid Power Society (IFPS) certification 
  • Experience maintaining commercial aluminum vessels including workboats, landing craft, and other shallow draft vessels. 
  • Experience maintaining oil spill response equipment, including pumps, skimmers, hydraulic power units, generators, trailers, and boom deployment systems. 
  • Experience operating forklifts, loaders, cranes, or similar heavy equipment. 
  • Coast Guard credentials or commercial marine experience. 
  • Experience working in remote or Arctic environments. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities  

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills. 
  • Thorough understanding of marine propulsion, hydraulic, electrical, fuel, and steering systems. 
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple maintenance activities. 
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a team. 
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills. 
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Commitment to safe work practices and environmental stewardship. 
  • Ability to respond effectively during emergency operations while maintaining composure under pressure. 

Physical Requirements  

  • Frequently lift and carry up to 75 pounds. 
  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crawl, climb, and work in confined spaces. 
  • Board, inspect, and repair vessels in both shop and field environments. 
  • Work outdoors for extended periods in Arctic weather conditions. 
  • Wear required personal protective equipment. 
  • Work extended hours, weekends, holidays, and emergency callouts as operational needs require. 

Working Conditions  

This position is based on Alaska’s North Slope and is performed in maintenance shops, warehouses, vessel facilities, and remote field locations. Work is performed indoors and outdoors in challenging Arctic conditions and may involve exposure to noise, vibration, fuels, lubricants, hydraulic fluids, moving equipment, and adverse weather. 

Emergency Response  

The Marine Mechanic is an essential member of the Alaska Clean Seas emergency response organization. The incumbent is expected to participate in spill response operations, drills, exercises, equipment deployments, and emergency callouts. Maintaining response readiness and ensuring mission critical equipment is operational are fundamental responsibilities of this position.
