The Data Engineering team provides seamless help to our internal stakeholders, ensuring an exceptional experience for all Crunchyroll fans. As a Senior Database Engineer for the Data Engineering team, you will maintain and enhance the reliability of our data infrastructure. Your work will directly impact the availability and performance of our data services, enabling the organization to make data‑driven decisions. You will collaborate with data engineers and software engineers to develop and drive 100% automation and establish best practices for deep monitoring and alerting. In the role of Senior Database Engineer, you will report to the Director of Data Engineering. We are hiring for the locations of Los Angeles, CA and San Francisco, CA. About You We get excited about candidates, like you, because they bring strong technical expertise and a proactive mindset. You have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. You have 8+ years of experience in site reliability engineering, database operations, or a related role focused on data platforms, data stores, and data operations. You have experience with AWS cloud platform and its data‑related services. You are proficient in monitoring tools (Datadog, CloudWatch, DevOps Guru, Database Performance Insights). You are proficient in one or more programming languages (Python, Java). You have a strong understanding of performance metrics, including Disk/IO saturation. You have experience identifying and eliminating bottlenecks in systems. You have a strong understanding of database internals such as types of indexes, schemas, and query plans. You have a strong understanding of database systems (SQL, NoSQL) and experience managing large‑scale data infrastructures. You possess basic knowledge of automation frameworks (Terraform, CloudFormation). You possess basic knowledge and have hands‑on experience with CI/CD pipelines and DataOps practices. You have experience with data governance, compliance, and lifecycle management. You have strong problem‑solving skills and a proactive approach to addressing issues. You can work independently, own projects, and effectively collaborate with the team to shape the vision of the data engineering organization. You have strong communication skills and can mentor and guide junior engineers. About the Team The Database Engineering team is dedicated to ensuring the reliability, scalability, and performance of our data infrastructure. We focus on standardizing and implementing monitoring and alerting across all datastores to track key metrics such as errors, latency, and throughput, ensuring critical systems are covered. Our team also leads efforts to keep databases up‑to‑date, implements Infrastructure as Code for high availability and performance, and automates key processes to enhance operational efficiency. We lead and evangelize the principle of 100% automation. Additionally, we define and document operational requirements, develop incident response processes, and automate monitoring and compliance checks to maintain a secure and reliable data environment. By continuously improving load testing and optimizing data governance practices, we support the overall health and efficiency of our data systems.
