Job Title: Yard Operator

Pay: $28/hour starting (room for advancement)

Hours: 6/7AM -5-5:30PM Monday-Friday (Some Saturdays in the summer) Full 40 hours in the winter

Job Description

This General Laborer role supports a busy concrete and aggregate operation by maintaining the yard, assisting with concrete testing, and helping keep materials, trucks, and equipment organized and moving efficiently. You will work primarily outdoors in a fast-paced environment, taking direction from batch operators and learning to operate a front-end loader as you grow in the role.

Responsibilities

• Perform general yard maintenance, including sweeping, cleaning, and keeping work areas organized and safe.
• Direct trucks around the yard to appropriate loading and unloading locations.
• Assist with stocking and monitoring inventory of materials and supplies.
• Conduct basic concrete testing in both field and plant settings, following established procedures.
• Take direction from batch operators on daily tasks and priorities around the yard.
• Dig and move materials as needed to support yard and plant operations.
• Use jackhammers and other tools to break up and remove concrete when required.
• Support batch operators by ensuring supplies and materials are in the correct locations at the start of each day.
• Complete assigned task lists and proactively assist other team members or perform additional yard maintenance when tasks are finished.
• Work independently and as part of a team to keep operations running smoothly throughout the day.

Essential Skills

• 1–2 years of experience working outdoors in a construction-type environment.
• Experience operating heavy equipment such as a front-end loader, skid steer, backhoe, or excavator.
• Ability to work overtime and handle long workdays when needed.
• Strong punctuality and reliability, with a desire to grow within the company.
• Ability to work effectively in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment.
• Basic data entry skills for recording tests, inventory, or other operational information.
• Comfort with physically demanding work, including lifting, digging, and standing or walking for extended periods.
• Ability to take direction and follow instructions from batch operators and other leaders on site.
• Capability to safely use hand and power tools in a construction yard setting.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with batch plants or concrete production environments.
• Familiarity with hand and power tools commonly used in construction and yard maintenance.
• Comfort using tools such as trowels and jackhammers for concrete-related tasks.
• Interest in learning to operate a front-end loader and other heavy equipment.
• Motivation to progress from general laborer to junior batch operator and eventually main batch operator.
• Willingness to work some Saturdays during the summer season as needed.

Work Environment

This role is based at a concrete and aggregate facility in Apple Valley, with most work performed outdoors in a fast-paced yard and plant environment. Typical hours are Monday through Friday, starting around 6:00–7:00 a.m. and running until approximately 5:00–5:30 p.m., with 10–12 hour days common and some Saturdays during the summer. You will arrive on site, confirm that supplies and materials are in the correct locations, receive a task list from the batch operator, and then work independently or with the team to complete yard, testing, and maintenance activities. The environment involves exposure to weather, concrete materials, heavy equipment, and hand and power tools, and requires comfort with physical labor and outdoor conditions. Dress should be practical and suitable for outdoor construction work, with appropriate footwear and protective gear to support safety and comfort throughout the day.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Burnsville, MN.

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $28.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.

This is a fully onsite position in Burnsville,MN.
