TAHC Livestock Inspector - Uvalde, Medina, Zavala, and Frio Counties

Position Title Livestock Inspector – Uvalde, Medina, Zavala, and Frio Counties Location Headquarters: Pleasanton Region (Region 5). Must reside in Uvalde, Medina, Zavala, or Frio counties. Position Summary Performs inspections at livestock markets, feedlots, slaughter plants, flea markets, farms, and ranches. Conducts livestock shipment inspections, collects samples, enforces disease control measures, provides public education, and participates in emergency management. Key Responsibilities Inspect livestock markets, feedlots, slaughter plants, flea markets, farms and ranches, and other locations where livestock, exotics, and poultry are gathered. Collect samples for testing from cattle, swine, equine, exotics, sheep, goats, and poultry. Enforce quarantines and other disease control measures, including livestock shipment activities. Conduct periodic public education contacts with community media resources and organizations. Participate in emergency management activities and responses to disease outbreaks. Maintain accurate and detailed work activity records. Drive extensively on a daily basis using personal or agency vehicle. Perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from standard high school or GED (+). USDA or TAHC Inspector experience as specified for levels: Inspector II – General livestock experience. Inspector III – At least 1 year as TAHC Livestock Inspector or USDA Animal Health Technician. Inspector IV – At least 3 years as TAHC Livestock Inspector or USDA Animal Health Technician. Inspector V – At least 5 years as TAHC Livestock Inspector or USDA Animal Health Technician. Note: This is a career ladder position; new hires come in at Inspector II classification and pay unless previously a TAHC Inspector or USDA Animal Health Technician. Inspectors cannot have personal involvement with livestock or poultry that creates a conflict of interest. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with livestock producers, market owners/operators, local emergency management coordinators, coworkers, and others involved in animal agriculture; keeping detailed written records; operating a laptop, handheld data collection device, GPS, and other equipment; effective oral and written communication; legible handwriting; ability to follow oral and written instructions; to safely handle livestock; to acquire knowledge of the laws and regulations governing livestock markets; to apply regulations; travel extensively (some overnight and weekends) and work occasional overtime. Physical Requirements Must have arm, hand, shoulder and back strength and dexterity to handle and restrain livestock. Lift and maneuver equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, and lift 50 pounds overhead to fill corn feeders. Other Requirements Cholinesterase testing may be required monthly. Inspectors required to be fit tested with a respirator. Must have a valid Texas driver’s license and safe driving record. Employment is contingent upon acceptable criminal background check and moving violation record. Reliable transportation required. Mileage reimbursed. Must provide proof of eligibility to work in the U.S.; males 18-25 must register with Selective Service. Important The TAHC is an emergency response agency. Position subject to rotating temporary duty assignments away from regular HQ for up to two weeks at a time. Duties may involve working in adverse conditions; may require irregular hours and overtime and include duties beyond the standard description.
