The Department of Social Services (DSS) is comprised of the administrative units of the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA) and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS). HRA is dedicated to fighting poverty and income inequality by providing New Yorkers in need with essential benefits such as Food Assistance and Emergency Rental Assistance. DHS is committed to preventing and addressing homelessness in New York City by employing a variety of innovative strategies to help families and individuals successfully exit shelter and return to self-sufficiency as quickly as possible.

HRA/General Support Services (GSS) provides safe, healthy, and appropriate facilities for HRA’s various social service programs. Its many functions include facilities planning and coordination, design and construction, renovation, repair and maintenance, custodial and other building services, health/safety program coordination, lease and property management, land use and environmental review activities, contract administration for facilities services, and warehouse operations. GSS plays a major role in HRA emergency preparedness.

General Support Services (GSS) Office of Facilities and Operations is recruiting for two (2) Custodian III to function as a Senior Building Custodian, who will:

- Supervise custodial staff in various titles, including Building Custodians, Assistant Building Custodians, Junior Building Custodians, and Custodial Assistants, who perform cleaning, sanitation, and building maintenance duties.

- Perform custodial, cleaning, sanitation, and related building maintenance duties, as needed to support daily operations, maintain service levels, and address staffing shortages, emergencies, or other operational needs.

- Assign schedules and monitor the daily work of custodial staff to ensure adequate coverage and efficient completion of assigned responsibilities.

- Inspect buildings and assigned areas to ensure that cleaning, sanitation, safety, and routine maintenance services are properly performed and meet established standards.

- Identify deficiencies, document areas requiring corrective action, and follow up to ensure that deficiencies are promptly addressed.

- Report building conditions, maintenance concerns, safety hazards, and required repairs to the appropriate supervisor or responsible unit.

- Organize requisitions, receive, store, and distribute custodial supplies, materials, and equipment to ensure staff have the necessary resources to perform their duties.

- Maintain appropriate control and accountability of custodial supplies, equipment, keys, and other City property.

- Arrange for the opening and closing of assigned buildings and ensure that doors, entrances, equipment, and other City property are properly secured.

- Monitor building conditions during assigned hours and take appropriate action when emergencies, security concerns, spills, leaks, equipment issues, or other unexpected conditions arise.

- Supervise and monitor the work of custodians and cleaning contracted personnel and report on their performance, including compliance with established cleaning requirements, schedules, and service standards.

- Train custodial employees in proper cleaning methods, use and care of equipment, safety procedures, and applicable workplace requirements.

- Provide guidance and directions to subordinate staff regarding work assignments, proper procedures, performance expectations, and workplace safety.

- Maintain records, logs, inspection reports, supply inventories, work schedules, and other documentation related to custodial operations.

- Respond to complaints and service requests concerning cleanliness, sanitation, building conditions, and custodial services and take appropriate corrective action.

- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Hours/Shift: Monday through Friday or Tuesday through Saturday as needed.

Rotating Shifts: 6:00AM - 2:30PM or 2:00PM - 10:30PM

Qualifications

Two years of full-time satisfactory experience in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings.
To be assigned to Assignment Level II, candidates must have three years of satisfactory experience as described in the "Qualification Requirements" above.
To be assigned to Assignment Level III and IV candidates must have four years of satisfactory experience as described in the "Qualification Requirements" above.
