Research Associate - LCLS SRD Laser and Chemical Sciences

Position Overview The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a highly capable and enthusiastic Research Associate to lead research at the intersection of laser and chemical sciences. LCLS recently turned on LCLS-II, a new high‑repetition‑rate XFEL that will enable repetition rates up to 1MHz, allowing the study of ultrafast dynamics down to atomic spatial and attosecond time scales with unprecedented detail. Ultrafast lasers are an essential part of LCLS’s capabilities, and the transition to LCLS‑II requires the development and operation of high‑average and high‑peak power laser sources. The successful candidate will join a group focused on state‑of‑the‑art ultrafast pulses across the UV and visible spectrum, working on sub‑10fs pulses generated via soliton dynamics in hollow‑core fibers for tabletop solution‑phase pump‑probe experiments that probe the fastest photophysical timescales, such as the photoprotection mechanism in DNA bases. Outcomes of this project will provide the foundation for future ultrafast pump‑probe experiments at the LCLS, combining laser technologies with ultrafast X‑rays to conduct world‑leading science. Specific Duties Design a tabletop solution‑phase pump‑probe experiment that fully utilizes sub‑10fs temporal resolution enabled by resonant dispersive‑wave optical pulses. Carry out simulations of non‑linear dynamics in hollow‑core fibers. Carry out ultrafast pump‑probe measurements of solution‑phase systems, interpret results, and publish findings. Collaborate with colleagues in the Laser Science and Chemical Science departments at LCLS to strengthen connections within the Science Research and Development Division. Participate in planning and execution of experiments using laser infrastructure and LCLS instruments. Prior experience with ultrafast lasers and pump‑probe measurements. Experience with data acquisition and processing (e.g., Python or MATLAB). Ability to conduct independent and collaborative research with colleagues from diverse backgrounds. Effective written and verbal communication skills; strong interpersonal skills. Additional Desired Experience Dispersion management in ultrafast pulses. Non‑linear pulse generation in the UV and visible regions. Vacuum system operation. Pay range: $70,000–$100,000 per annum, determined based on scope, qualifications, budget, equity, location, and market considerations.
