Job Title: Certified Pharmacy Technician – Prior Authorization and Patient Support Specialist Job Description

This onsite role supports patients with rare diseases by managing prior authorizations, coordinating with manufacturers and insurance companies, and processing pharmacy claims in a fast-paced specialty pharmacy environment. You will handle high-volume inbound and outbound calls, ensure accurate documentation, and follow established procedures to help patients access their medications as smoothly and quickly as possible. The position offers opportunities to cross-train on all aspects of Skyclarys, develop into a subject matter expert, and potentially transition from contract to a permanent role based on performance and business needs.

• Answer inbound calls from patients, manufacturers, and insurance companies in a professional and courteous manner.
• Make outbound calls to patients, insurance companies, and manufacturers to gather information and provide updates on patient cases.
• Obtain clinical documentation from providers’ offices to support prior authorization requests for patient therapies.
• Submit clinical documentation to each insurance company in the format and method they require for prior authorization review.
• Follow up on prior authorization submissions in a timely manner to confirm status and secure approvals.
• Learn and use the pharmacy management system to process patients’ pharmacy claims accurately and efficiently.
• Follow established standard operating procedures (SOPs) consistently to maintain accurate and compliant records.
• Document clear, accurate, and detailed progress notes for each patient interaction and call, targeting 25–30 calls per day.
• Communicate effectively with leadership and team members to share updates, escalate issues, and ensure coordinated patient support.
• Maintain strong attention to detail when entering data, reviewing documentation, and processing claims.
• Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills when navigating complex insurance and prior authorization scenarios.
• Work independently with minimal guidance while contributing positively to a collaborative team environment.
• Adapt to changing assignments and priorities from day to day in a fast-paced setting.
• Provide compassionate service to patients and show respect and professionalism toward all teammates.

• Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to analyze information and make sound decisions.
• Excellent communication skills, including clear verbal and written communication with patients, manufacturers, and insurance representatives.
• Proven customer service skills with the ability to remain professional and composed, even in challenging interactions.
• Experience with prior authorizations, including obtaining clinical documentation and submitting requests to insurance companies (strongly preferred).
• Data entry proficiency with high accuracy and attention to detail.
• Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential preferred.
• Active pharmacy technician license where required by jurisdiction.
• Experience in retail pharmacy or similar pharmacy setting.
• Familiarity with call center environments and handling a high volume of calls (approximately 25–30 calls per day).
• Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Teams for communication and coordination.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
• Comfort using pharmacy management systems to process pharmacy claims.
• Ability to follow established SOPs and processes consistently.
• Capability to work independently with limited supervision while meeting performance expectations.
• Adaptability to pivot quickly in a fast-paced environment and manage changing tasks.

• Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification is preferred and considered a strong asset.
• Experience in a specialty pharmacy or healthcare setting supporting patients with complex or rare diseases is beneficial.
• Prior experience in insurance verification, benefits investigation, or reimbursement support is a plus.
• Comfort working in a structured, process-driven environment with defined SOPs.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple cases and follow-ups simultaneously.
• High level of compassion and empathy for patients navigating complex treatment journeys.
• Interest in becoming a subject matter expert in Skyclarys through cross-training on all aspects of the program.
• Openness to contract work with the potential for conversion to a full-time permanent role based on performance and headcount.
• Comfort working as part of a small, multidisciplinary team (current team size is approximately seven employees).

This role is fully onsite in an office environment in Cary, NC. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with a one-hour unpaid lunch, aligning with broader pharmacy hours of 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM EST and no weekend operations. The position begins as fully onsite, with the potential for increased flexibility once you demonstrate consistent performance and proficiency. You will work in a non–patient-facing setting, interacting with patients, manufacturers, and insurers by phone and digital tools rather than in person. The team operates in a fast-paced, growth-oriented specialty pharmacy focused on simplifying access to medications and providing personalized care for patients with rare diseases. You will use a pharmacy management system, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft Excel as part of your daily workflow. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cary, NC.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
