Manager, Workers' Compensation

Job Description San Diego Unified School District, the second largest district in California, seeks a Manager, Workers' Compensation who cares deeply for students and is committed to their communities. Responsibilities Manage the operation of a team of examiners and technical staff for the Risk Management department. Provide training and monitor individual claims activity. Offer technical and jurisdictional direction to examiner reports on claims adjudication. Maintain detailed diaries on claims, including frequent updates on complex or high exposure claims. Identify trends, problems, and issues and recommend a course of action. Identify new procedures and ideas for continuous process improvement. Compile, review, and analyze reports and take appropriate action. Perform quality reviews on claims in compliance with audit requirements and standards. Act as second level of appeal for claimant issues regarding claim‑specific, procedural, or special requests and implement final disposition of the appeal. Review reserve amounts on high‑cost claims and claims over the authority of the individual examiner. Monitor and maintain periodical review of litigated claims, serious vocation rehabilitation claims, questionable claims, and sensitive claims. Verify direct reports are properly licensed in the jurisdictions serviced. Ensure claim files are coded correctly and adequate documentation is made by claims examiners. Train and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; provide continuing departmental staff training programs; interview and select employees; and recommend transfers, reassignments, terminations, and disciplinary actions. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in risk management, business administration, public administration, or a related field. At least five (5) years of claims management experience, including three (3) years of supervisory experience. Professional certifications applicable to the line of business are preferred but not required. Self‑Insurance Administrator’s license may be required. Working knowledge of district paid health and wellness benefits for employees and dependents.
