911 Public Safety Dispatcher- (HR Title: Communications Officer)

911 Public Safety Dispatcher Southern Methodist University (SMU), Dallas, TX Full Time Hourly Range: Hourly wage commensurate with experience and certifications. About the Position The Public Safety Dispatcher / 911 Operator handles communications through the police radio system and a multi-line telephone system, monitors campus fire and intrusion alarms, initiates appropriate responses, collects and records payments for services, addresses inquiries, and prepares detailed reports. The role also requires proficient operation of multiple computer systems, including surveillance cameras, voice recording equipment, records management systems, and nationwide databases. Essential Functions Receive complaints and inquiries from the university community by telephone, email, or in person, assess the information, and deploy police, fire, or emergency medical services as appropriate using the radio communication system. Maintain a computer-based log of all police activities, document service calls and radio communications in the CAD system, determine prior interactions, submit reports, and update reference manuals. Manage multiple computer systems, including a CCTV network with over 2,000 cameras, fire and security alarm monitoring, 911 services, and a police blotter. Collect and record payments for fingerprints, reports, and notary services. Oversee and maintain all equipment in the emergency communication center to ensure reliability and continuity of emergency response operations, conducting regular inspections and reporting any malfunctions. Must be available to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays, as assigned; the SMU Police Department operates 24/7. Qualifications Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree preferred. Minimum one year of experience in a high-volume customer service environment, preferably in a dispatch center and/or security setting. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Excellent verbal communication skills, ability to speak clearly and interact effectively in all circumstances. Sound decision-making capabilities, problem-solving skills, and composure while handling stressful situations. Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; ability to develop and maintain effective relationships across the university. Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills. Active TCOLE Telecommunications Operator License required. Proficiency with Windows OS and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) required. Knowledge of records management systems preferred. Preference for familiarity with law enforcement terminology and procedures. Physical and Environmental Demands Physical Sit for long periods; bend, reach above shoulders; handle objects requiring dexterity. Carry or lift 25–50 lbs. frequently; kneel, stand; push or pull as needed. Environmental Exposure to excessive noise, moving machinery, marked changes in temperature or humidity, dust, fumes, gases, radiation, and microwaves.
