LIFE SCIENCE TEACHER - 195 DAY

Job Summary This position plans and implements an instructional program and provides related educational services for students. It manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement, and modifies instructional activities as required. The teacher may work in single or multi‑grade classrooms, subject or specialty‑oriented classes, and may teach in science labs or other educational labs requiring increased monitoring to reduce the risk of accidental injury. Work is performed under the general supervision of a principal and/or other designated administrator. Essential Responsibilities Assess continually student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes. Plan and implement appropriate instructional and/or learning strategies and activities, determining appropriate kind and level of materials, and utilize a variety of instructional materials and available multi‑media and computer technology to enhance learning. Manage the behavior of learners in an instructional setting to ensure a conducive learning environment and assist in the management of student behavior in other parts of the school, center, or work site. Coordinate instructional activities with other professional staff, both school and non‑school‑based, to maximize learning opportunities. Work in a self‑contained, team, departmental, itinerant capacity, or in field, and may make off‑school site visits to monitor students, confer with employers, or site instructors. Participate in in‑service and professional development activities and staff meetings, as required or assigned. Foster partnerships and ensure continuous communication with parents, both written and oral, keeping them informed of student progress. Communicate continually with students on instructional expectations, keeping them informed of progress toward expectations. Assign work to and supervise instructional assistants, parent, and student volunteers. Serve at two or more schools on a regular basis as itinerant. Support or participate in schoolwide student activities and social events. Monitor student behavior in non‑instructional areas and intervene to control and modify disruptive behavior, reporting to the appropriate administrator as assigned or required. Collaborate with other professionals (guidance counselors, librarians, etc.) to carry out schoolwide instructional or related activities as needed. Other Duties as Assigned Additional duties may be assigned as needed to support the school’s educational programs. Qualifications for Successful Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Behaviors Knowledge of the Instructional Process Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of instructional specialty(ies) to which assigned Knowledge of pre‑adolescent and adolescent growth and development Knowledge of Prince William County Curriculum related to assignments and School Division mission, goals, and organization Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs Skill in the use of multi‑media and computer technology to enhance learning Ability to plan and implement lessons based on Division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned Skill in oral and written communication; excellent human relations skills Education or Equivalency Requirements Minimum: Bachelor's Degree Work Experience Requirements Equivalent to at least Type Area or Field Certification and License Requirements State: Collegiate professional, postgraduate professional, or appropriate vocational certificate/license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with endorsement(s) required for teaching assignment(s); must be eligible for the Virginia State Certification Program. Other: If assigned off‑site tasks or serving as an itinerant, possession of a valid automobile operator’s license to operate a vehicle in Virginia is required.
