Job Summary

Summary:

Under the direction of the Vice President of Instruction, the Dean of Career Education provides visionary leadership in support of workforce development resources. The Dean supervises assigned academic and classified personnel and coordinates career educational programs, resources, and budgets.

The Career Education Dean oversees ten major departments within the division.

  • Computer and Information Science & Computer Science
  • Graphic Design
  • CADD and Advanced Manufacturing
  • Child Development
  • Environmental Health and Safety Management
  • Ornamental Horticulture
  • Surveying

The Dean works collaboratively with other campus departments to coordinate these programs.

Education And Experience:

Any combination equivalent to: Master's degree from an accredited institution plus five years of achievement in higher education management, supervision, or leadership, with emphasis in one or more of the areas to which the Dean position is assigned.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities:
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and support of Cuyamaca College's vision, mission, and values in the CE Division's programs and services and within the institution.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and support of diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and accessibility in support of student success and retention.
  • Manage, plan, coordinate, and evaluate division programs in accordance with legal requirements, district policies, state guidelines, and sound instructional principles and practices.
  • Communicate statutes, college policies, procedures, and philosophies to assigned staff and to other college employees and students when appropriate.
  • Assist with hiring, evaluation, and retention of assigned faculty and staff according to statutes and Governing Board policy; plan and coordinate orientation and in-service education for professional development of program faculty and staff ; assign certificated and classified staff to work areas, hours, and duties.
  • Facilitate the resolution of student, instructor, and staff conflicts and problems.
  • Prepare budgets and submit through appropriate channels for approval; monitor and control assigned program-operating budgets; initiate special fund requests; determine need and priority for capital equipment and materials.
  • Serve as a member of district, site or other local and regional committees and task forces.
  • Support underperforming programs by analysis of student learning outcomes and program review, providing innovation and resources including timelines and goals.
  • Co-chair the WorkForce Development Committee.
  • Coordinate program review and planning, curriculum development and outcomes assessment for the division.

Necessary Qualifications:

  • Demonstrates sensitivity to and an understanding of students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, racial, and ethnic backgrounds; students who are differently abled, and students who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community.
  • Ability to advance the College's vision, mission, and values in the CE Division's programs and services and within the institution.
  • Ability to advance the College's strategic goals related to access, success, retention, eliminating equity gaps, and increasing equity in hiring in the CE Division's programs and services and within the institution.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the collaborative decision-making process and the collegial process, including the ability to work effectively and cooperatively with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Experience administering, directing, planning and coordinating Career Education disciplines and departments in accordance with legal requirements, district policies, and effective instructional principles and practices.
  • Experience developing course schedules across multiple disciplines to meet strategic enrollment planning principles and goals.
  • Ability to interpret and use qualitative and quantitative data to support effective, people-centered decision-making, planning, and problem-solving to include equity-minded teaching strategies and practices in all modalities.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and manage multiple budgets, funding sources, and operational resources across diverse programs while balancing unrestricted, restricted, categorical, grant-funded, and partnership-supported initiatives, as well as Perkins and Strong Workforce funds in support of student access, workforce priorities, staffing and infrastructure needs, program sustainability, and fiscal accountability.
  • Ability to communicate orally, in writing and in a timely manner effectively, thoughtfully, transparently, and collaboratively.
  • Experience using technology to support effective, efficient, and human-centered operations and communication.
  • Experience facilitating respectful communication, collaboration, and constructive resolution of conflicts and challenges among diverse groups and perspectives.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining effective relationships with industry partners and industry advisory boards.
Other Qualifications:
  • Ability to interpret, articulate, and implement pertinent state and federal laws and regulations concerning community colleges with emphasis in Career Education programs, including but not limited to Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Title 5 regulations, 10+1, California Education Code, and additional outside organizations.
  • Experience with previous successful management of college programs.
  • Experience writing successful grant applications and with resource management.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a comprehensive, student-centered environment that facilitates learning and student development.
