$74.23k - $98.36kPortland State University
Director of Faculty Affairs & Academic Personnel Position Summary Portland State University is Oregon’s most affordable public research university, located in the heart of one of America’s most dynamic cities. Our mission to “let knowledge serve the city” reflects our dedication to turning ideas into action — in Portland and around the world. The city is our campus, giving students unmatched access to career connections, a vibrant cultural scene and hands‑on learning experiences with hundreds of community partners. More than 20,000 students from all backgrounds bring diverse perspectives to our classrooms and campus life, from the tree‑lined Park Blocks to the bustling Urban Plaza and state‑of‑the‑art science labs. We are proud of our world‑class faculty, groundbreaking research and international reputation for excellence in sustainability, community engagement and innovation. The Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) is the central academic administrative office responsible for the institutional academic mission, programming, and policy implementation, support programs for academic personnel and students (including registration and advising), and academic fiscal management. Guided by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the OAA collaborates with faculty, deans, vice provosts, and other administrators to achieve the university’s academic mission and vision. The Director of Faculty Affairs & Academic Personnel reports to the Vice Provost for Faculty Success and serves as a key thought partner, providing confidential assistance to the Vice Provost and other academic leaders. The role supports complex campus‑wide operations related to academic personnel, including promotion, tenure, and review processes; faculty hiring; and other personnel‑related matters for academic employees. It also supports leadership development for department chairs, assistant and associate deans, and early‑ and mid‑career faculty. Responsibilities Understand and navigate the university’s administrative systems and policies, including Oregon Administrative Rules, Portland State University policies, and Collective Bargaining Agreements. Apply technical knowledge to diverse situations while ensuring confidentiality, compliance with policies and labor contracts, and adherence to diversity, equity, inclusion, and legal requirements in personnel matters. Prioritize and manage multiple projects and deadlines, working effectively in a team context and handling peak loads that follow the academic calendar. Initiate and proactively problem‑solve, demonstrating sound judgment and anticipatory skills. Work with a broad range of administrative professionals, campus leaders, and faculty as part of the Academic Employee & Labor Relations Team. Maintain a high degree of integrity and establish productive professional relationships; deliver excellent customer service; and demonstrate sensitivity to persons of diverse backgrounds. Maintain confidentiality regarding all personnel matters, particularly those related to collective bargaining with academic unions. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in a related field of study and 6 or more years of professional experience in a higher education environment that includes employment‑related processes. Experience working with PeopleAdmin or other human resources position management software. Experience working with Banner, Cognos, or other centralized human resources personnel‑related data information systems. Professional writing and presentation skills. Proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Workspace. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in higher education management or a related field, with 4 or more years of experience in a higher education environment that includes application of employment‑related processes. Experience in promotion, recruitment, and retention practices for academic employees, especially faculty. Experience working with classification and compensation philosophies. Experience in policy and/or compliance practice development and implementation. Experience working in a unionized environment. Create an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates differences. Function and communicate effectively and respectfully within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds. Seek opportunities to gain experience working and collaborating in diverse, multicultural, and inclusive settings with a willingness to change for continual improvement. Adhere to all of PSU’s policies, including the policies on prohibited discrimination & harassment and the professional standards of conduct. Work Days and Hours Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week, schedule to be determined. Compensation and Benefits The salary for this position will be between $74,232 and $98,364, with potential for negotiation above this range based on experience, skills, market parity, and internal equity. The role offers a comprehensive benefits package, including 95% premium‑paid healthcare, a generous retirement and vacation package, and reduced tuition rates for employees, spouses, or dependents at Oregon University System schools.
