Medical Oncology Registered Nurse (RN)

This role is situated in a Medical Oncology unit that incorporates progressive care beds and pediatric patients. The unit handles high-acuity cases requiring PCU level care, as well as a smaller volume of medical-surgical patients.

Accepting a 12-hour rotating contract can lead to assignments across day, night, or a combination of shifts, based on departmental needs. Shift assignments are reviewed every four-week scheduling period; however, changes depend on staffing priorities at that time.

Patient diagnoses include solid tumor, orthopedic oncology, and thoracic oncology.

The unit features 36 beds in total, with over 24 designated for PCU level care. While pediatric patients are occasionally admitted, their care is typically handled by permanent staff members, and pediatric experience is not a requirement for agency nurses.

Key responsibilities include providing high-quality nursing care to patients with complex oncology diagnoses, focusing on infection prevention protocols and fall prevention strategies, and utilizing telemetry monitoring equipment and other specialized medical devices.

Equipment utilized includes B450 monitors GE telemetry system, bladder scanner, Alaris pumps, Stryker beds, continuous bladder irrigation, PCA pumps.

Qualifications include a minimum of 2 years of acute care nursing experience, with at least 1 year in a high-acuity PCU setting. Current certifications: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and NIH Stroke Scale.

Patient care ratios are 1:4-5 for Medical Surgical Telemetry and 1:3 for PCU.

Required skills include interpretation of dysrhythmias, management of rapid response team interventions, feeding tube care and management, port access and blood product administration, central line and peripheral line care/management, PICC line management and IV initiation, heparin protocol administration, administration and management of cardiac drips (without titration), PCA management, chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac), external CPAP/BIPAP and high flow nasal cannula (HFNC) management, ABG interpretation, and tracheostomy management.

Preferred skills include management of dysrhythmias and IV insulin protocols, titration of insulin drips, phlebotomy and wound care (including Wound Vac), arterial line management and surgical drain handling, non-invasive airway management techniques.
