Corrections Officer (Advanced Entry-Level)

ADVANCED ENTRY OFFICER INCENTIVE

The City of Puyallup offers a hiring bonus of $15,000 for Advanced Entry Corrections Officers, paid in three installments: $5,000 upon hire, $5,000 after completing the Corrections Training Officer (CTO) program, and $5,000 upon completion of probation. The bonus must be repaid in full if an employee separates from employment prior to three years of service. Benefits Vacation Leave: 50 hours added to the vacation leave bank upon completion of the CTO program. Sick Leave: 50 hours added to the sick leave bank upon completion of the CTO program. Monthly Salary: $6,526.06 – $7,517.64. Shift Differential: 5.1% for 12‑hour shifts (0600‑1800 dayshift, 1800‑0600 nightshift). Education Incentive Pay: 4% for a Bachelor’s degree, 2% for an Associate degree. Longevity Pay beginning at 5 years of service. Bilingual Pay: 1% premium. Medical, dental, vision, life and long‑term disability coverage for employees and dependents. After one year of meeting the wellness program incentive, the city pays 100% of medical premiums for the following year. Responsibilities Receive prisoners, book them into the jail, take photographs, fingerprints, and complete records; search prisoners; inventory and secure property; use physical force if necessary. Direct or personally prepare and serve meals, clean areas, issue clothing and bedding. Escort visitors and prisoners to and from court hearings; enforce standards; maintain records. Coordinate medical services; administer medication as instructed by medical professionals. Schedule and supervise recreation opportunities. Direct in‑custody court video arraignments; collaborate with court staff and interpreters. Explain jail procedures, rules, and ordinances to prisoners and citizens; enforce compliance. Maintain records of citations; write reports including use‑of‑force and memorandums; log property into evidence room. Testify in trials. Provide armed transportation of prisoners to various destinations. Perform additional duties as assigned. Knowledge, Ability, and Experience Knowledge of: rules and regulations concerning the care and custody of prisoners; record keeping and report writing. Ability to: learn and enforce standards and regulations; qualify with a department‑approved firearm; operate a City vehicle safely; restrain and transport prisoners safely; maintain accurate records; complete mandatory training; interact pleasantly with the public; communicate effectively in English; demonstrate required physical strength and agility; establish positive working relationships; maintain reliable attendance. Experience and Education (Advanced Entry‑Level): United States citizen, lawful permanent resident, or deferred‑action for childhood arrivals. Fluency in English. Valid Washington State driver's license. Graduate of the Washington State Correction Officers Academy or Basic Law Enforcement Academy, or equivalent program, with up to 24 months of experience as a corrections officer or at least 2 years of patrol officer experience. No break in service greater than 24 months if not currently employed as a corrections or police officer. Physical Requirements Lift or carry up to 70 pounds occasionally. Perform tactical self‑defense during escape attempts. Restrain prisoners. Endurance to move frequently, stand, sit, kneel, crouch, bend, stoop, and crawl. Repeated hand motion for computer data entry. Working Conditions Rotating shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overtime. Operations in a jail and outdoor environments in various weather conditions. City vehicle operation. Union Affiliation Support Services bargaining unit (Puyallup Police Association). Trial Service Period 12‑month probationary period before regular status.
