Joint Venture Facilitator - California Institute for Women

Overview The Last Mile, a San Francisco, CA-based non-profit, is the first prison program in the U.S. to provide in-prison software engineering training. The Last Mile (TLM) Joint Venture (JV) Facilitator works on-site at the California Institution for Women (CIW) to supervise projects and manage the program's daily operations. This role is a direct point of contact for the incarcerated individuals (referred to as "interns" in the original description, but "Adult Offenders" or "II's" in the contract) who are working in the Joint Venture (JVP). The facilitator is responsible for ensuring a productive and constructive work environment. While the interns handle the web and digital interface design projects on their computers, the facilitator manages the operational and administrative aspects of the JVP. This position reports to the ProOps Manager and is an onsite role. The salary range is based on the employee's geographic location and experience. Responsibilities Joint Venture Operations Create and maintain a healthy, professional, and constructive workplace culture among incarcerated individuals. Provide vocational training and develop job skills for incarcerated individuals in a real work setting. Facilitate remote meetings for incarcerated individuals. Serve as the primary point of contact for the incarcerated individuals, providing feedback and insight into their experience to the JVP and executive staff. Empower incarcerated individuals to set and work towards individual goals, including building personal plans and self-advocacy. Report all acts of misconduct by incarcerated individuals that violate laws, regulations, or rules to the CIW Contact(s) for custody or institution issues or designee. Cooperate with and defer to the institution's custody staff in emergency situations. Act as a technical sounding board and "rubber ducky" for incarcerated individuals, helping them talk through logic and troubleshoot bugs in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Oversee the project lifecycle from design to deployment, ensuring interns effectively use Figma for design and GitLab for version control. Guide interns in clearing technical blockers and maintaining project momentum without providing direct answers, fostering independent problem-solving. Administrative & Logistical Manage schedules and all necessary paperwork for incarcerated individuals, including completing quarterly performance evaluations. Maintain records of any issues with incarcerated individuals or equipment. Provide and safeguard time-keeping documentation (CDCR 1697). Maintain equipment, coordinate software installations and maintenance, and manage logistics for video remote sessions. Coordinate with the institution's staff to obtain gate clearances for vendors, which require at least 10 business days' notice. Ensure all necessary notices required by the contract, law, or court order are provided to new employees and posted in a prominent location. Must not currently be on the visiting list of any individual incarcerated at CIW, unless related. Essential Skills Demonstrated experience in a leadership position, working with diverse groups. Excellent communication skills, including empathetic listening, and the ability to speak to groups of various sizes in a teaching situation. Experience in maintaining firm professional boundaries in a high-stakes environment, Ability to identify and de-escalate potential conflicts. Maintain a positive and supportive attitude at all times. Must be proficient in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with the ability to read, debug, and explain code logic. Demonstrated experience managing projects via GitLab and translating designs from Figma into functional code. Ability to use "Rubber Ducking" techniques—listening to an intern explain their code to help them identify their own errors—and providing constructive feedback on their technical approach. Compliance & Requirements Ability to satisfy the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) background investigation and gate clearance requirements, which include a California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) check. Must be able to comply with all rules and regulations of the institution, including those regarding contraband, conduct, and clothing restrictions. Required to be examined and tested for Tuberculosis (TB) by a licensed healthcare provider before starting work and annually thereafter. Must not be a former state employee who engaged in negotiation or policy-making for this agreement within a specific timeframe after leaving state employment. Must comply with the Prison Rape Elimination Policy (PREA) and complete a criminal background check. Must not bring electronic or communication devices such as pagers, cell phones, or cameras onto the institution's grounds. Working Conditions Must be able to walk extended distances (up to 1 mile or more per day) across the institution's grounds to reach the assigned work area. Ability to stand or move about the classroom for long periods to provide side‑by‑side technical support to interns.
