Rotating Shift Description: **Evening shift: 5pm-1am** POSITION DESCRIPTION: Primary responsibilities include performing all necessary procedures pertaining to accessioning, technical preparation, grossing and dictation of all pathology Surgical & Cytology specimens. This individual must function with a high degree of technical expertise regarding handling of specimens to ensure accuracy of diagnoses made from specimens submitted for evaluation. Effectively and efficiently prioritizes workflow within the department. Uses the laboratory computer system and equipment. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Completes Gross description and dictation of simple surgical specimens. Picks up pathology specimens from various locations throughout the hospital and campus such as surgery, endoscopy, etc. Assists Pathologists and Pathologist Assistants in designated procedures. Prints labels and work lists. Answers telephone and assists coworkers, patients, staff and pathologists as needed. Demonstrates proficiency and understanding of Pathology and Cytology preparations and procedures using established quality control standards to ensure patient safety. Stains and coverslips all NON-GYN, GYN and other pathology slides utilizing proper techniques. Displays proper use of required laboratory equipment and performs necessary quality control and maintenance of assigned lab equipment and records. Assists with basic or designated Histology procedures. Cleans and stocks all work areas. Monitors inventory for Pathology areas. Follows policy and procedures for storage length and proper disposal of blocks, slides, surgical specimens, requisitions and reports. Effectively and efficiently prioritizes workflow within the department. Remains abreast of developments through self-study and seminar attendance. Performs other duties as assigned.

Responsible for ongoing professional development - maintains appropriate licensure/certification and continuing education credentials, participates in available learning opportunities as needed.
MEASURED BY: Performance that meets or exceeds IHA CARES Values expectation as outlined in IHA Performance Review document, relative to position. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: EDUCATION: High School diploma. Two years of college course work completed (40-60 credit hours) with emphasis in a science curriculum, 12 hours' science credits preferred. Associates of Science, Applied Science (or similar) preferred. CREDENTIALS/LICENSURE: Valid CPR Certification. MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Experience working in Cytology Preparation and/ or Histology Processing preferred, with knowledge of medical terminology. POSITION REQUIREMENTS (ABILITIES & SKILLS): Knowledge of patient care procedures and organizational policies related to position responsibilities. Proficient/knowledgeable in medical terminology. Proficient in operating a standard desktop and Windows-based computer system, including but not limited to, electronic medical records, email, e-learning, intranet, Microsoft Word and Excel, and computer navigation. Ability to use other software as required while performing the essential functions of the job. Excellent communication skills in both written and verbal forms, including proper phone etiquette. Ability to speak before groups of people, either in-person or virtually. Demonstrates group presentation skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment; displays courteous and friendly demeanor. Balances team and individual responsibilities. Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness. Looks for ways to improve and promote quality. Monitors own work to ensure quality. Ability to work effectively with various levels of organizational members and diverse populations including IHA staff, physicians, patients, family members, hospital staff, non-IHA physicians and staff. Ability to cross-train in other areas of practice in order to achieve smooth flow of all operations. Good organizational and time management skills to effectively juggle multiple priorities and time constraints. Ability to exercise sound judgement and timely problem-solving skills; uses intuition and experience to complement data. Includes appropriate people in decision-making process. Ability to handle patient and organizational information in a confidential manner. Knowledge of the compliance aspects of clinical care and patient privacy and best practices in medical office operations. Successful completion of IHA competency-based program within introductory and training period. MINIMUM PHYSICAL EXPECTATIONS: Physical activity that often requires keyboarding, phone work and charting. Physical activity that often requires extensive time working on a computer. Physical activity that often requires ability to use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms. Physical activity that often requires grossing specimen, walking, sitting, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, climbing, kneeling and/or twisting. Physical activity that may require lifting, pushing and/or pulling up to 20 lbs. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust and focus. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment. Must hear and speak well enough to conduct business over the telephone or face to face for long periods of time in English.
MINIMUM ENVIRONMENTAL EXPECTATIONS : This job operates in a medical facility and requires regular walking to various locations around the hospital/clinic. Employees will be working where there is patient care equipment. Hazardous materials, including blood borne pathogens and bodily fluids are also present. Exposure to sharps, x-rays, patients' conditions and some unpleasant sights, smells and contagious diseases is possible. This position requires significant interaction with people (Pathologists, Physicians Assistants, Lab Techs, Lab Management, etc.).
