Building Maintenance Technician

The Catholic Diocese of Richmond is seeking an experienced Building Maintenance Technician to help maintain our 56,000 square foot Pastoral Center and serve as the primary facilities representative during afternoon and evening hours.


This is a hands-on position for a skilled maintenance or handyman professional who can independently troubleshoot problems, complete general building repairs, preventative maintenance, and help ensure our facility remains safe, functional, and welcoming. The ideal candidate has broad experience with general maintenance and trades, including carpentry, painting, drywall, minor plumbing, and basic electrical repairs.


This is a full-time position offering excellent benefits, and a consistent Monday - Friday schedule from 1:00p.m. to 9:00 p.m.


Responsibilities and Tasks:

• Receives and personally completes maintenance work order requests ensuring the delivery of excellent customer service, a safe work environment and a consistent diocesan image.
• Prepares for and supports Pastoral Center activities, including meeting-room setup and breakdown. Provides Facilities coverage for evening meetings and events and responds to room setup, building access, safety, and other facility needs that arise during after-hours use.
• Uses evening hours to independently complete projects that are difficult or disruptive to perform during the normal workday, including heavier/deeper cleaning, painting, drywall patching and repair, minor cosmetic repairs and touch-ups, and similar facility improvement work.
• Walks the outside of the property daily to collect loose trash/debris, blow leaves, and in general terms, monitors the outside of the building and grounds. Removes snow and ice from sidewalks in front and on the sides of the Pastoral Center.
• Moves, loads and unloads furniture, boxes, supplies, equipment and tools within and outside of the facility. Accepts deliveries to the facility on a daily basis, transporting same to desired location(s).
• Performs custodial duties as needed, i.e., mopping floors, vacuuming, cleaning windows, stocking inventory, removing, and consolidating trash, etc.
• Practices safe work habits and safety precautions when performing maintenance tasks and functions. Complies with all OSHA safety regulations.
• Uses a variety of hand and power tools and material handling equipment to perform duties.
• Reads and interprets equipment manuals and work orders to perform required maintenance and service.
• Diagnoses/troubleshoots problems, replaces or repairs parts, tests and makes adjustments. Performs regular preventive maintenance on machines, equipment and plant facilities.
• Ensures proper functioning of air conditioners, heat, lights, doors, locks, etc.
• Performs various routine and preventative facility maintenance and repairs including carpentry, plumbing, trash disposal, electrical, painting, drywall repair, and other cosmetic maintenance and touch-ups based on skill level and experience.
• Ensures completion of routine maintenance of the Diocesan vans & fleet.
• Drives to the bank regularly to make deposits as requested.
• Carries and delivers US postal service mail, federal express or UPS packages as needed.
• Performs all other duties as assigned or needed by the Director.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Has a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent with a Technical or Trade School Certificate preferred. A valid state driver's license and clean driving record is required.
2. Must have two to three years in maintenance upkeep and repair including some plumbing, carpentry, and electrical; ability to perform physical requirements; good organization and problem-solving skills and strong time management skills.
3. Be highly self-motivated, dependable, and able to work independently with limited or no onsite supervision for approximately half of the shift; must exercise sound judgment, prioritize work, manage time effectively, and reliably complete assigned projects; good interpersonal and customer service skills; basic working knowledge of computer software packages, and knowledge of procedures and practices, tools and equipment used in maintenance and chemical cleaning supplies.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must possess ability to lift and move objects up to 75 lbs. consistently with heavier weight necessary at times. The role requires walking long distances daily around a 56,000 square foot facility with ability to regularly bend, stoop, squat, reach and climb stairs and ladders. Additionally, this position is on your feet most of the day. Ability to drive vans or other diocesan vehicles is required.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

This is a full-time position (35 or more hours per week) with hours normally being 1:00 PM - 9:00 PM Monday - Friday; however, hours may vary due to work demands and/or emergency situations. The schedule is intentionally structured to provide evening Facilities coverage. The employee works independently with limited or no onsite supervision for approximately half of the shift and is expected to support evening meetings and productively complete maintenance and improvement projects. This position is full-time and based out of the Pastoral Center in Richmond, VA. Frequent day travel is required; minimal overnight travel may be requested.
