Senior IP Associate

Position Overview
We are seeking a seasoned Senior IP Associate to join our intellectual property practice. The successful candidate will lead and manage patent prosecution and drafting matters, provide strategic counsel on patentability and portfolio development, and interact with clients and the USPTO to secure and enforce patent rights. This role requires deep technical understanding of patents, excellent drafting and prosecution skills, and experience handling complex IP matters across diverse technologies.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead patent prosecution before the USPTO and international patent offices, including preparing and filing nonprovisional and provisional patent applications, responses to office actions, and appeals.
• Draft clear, persuasive, and technically accurate patent specifications, claims, and related documents in collaboration with inventors and technical teams.
• Develop and execute prosecution strategies to maximize claim scope and value while managing prosecution costs and timelines.
• Advise clients on patentability, freedom-to-operate, infringement risks, and portfolio management, translating technical concepts into actionable legal strategies.
• Mentor and supervise junior associates and paralegals, providing feedback on drafting, prosecution strategy, and professional development.
• Coordinate with outside counsel, foreign associates, and prosecution support teams to ensure consistent global IP protection and effective prosecution workflows.
• Manage client relationships, prepare status reports, and communicate complex IP issues clearly to clients and stakeholders.
• Stay current on USPTO rules, procedures, and case law developments, and implement best practices to improve prosecution outcomes.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school and admission to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction.
• Admission to the USPTO (registered patent attorney or agent) with demonstrated experience prosecuting before the USPTO.
• 5+ years of patent prosecution experience, including drafting and prosecuting patent applications in complex technology areas (e.g., software, electronics, biotech, or mechanical systems).
• Proven drafting skills with strong claim-writing ability and a track record of successfully navigating office actions and appeals.
• Excellent analytical, written, and oral communication skills, with the ability to explain technical and legal concepts to diverse audiences.
• Experience supervising or mentoring junior attorneys and managing multiple client matters simultaneously.
• Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to develop practical, client-focused IP strategies.

$175000 - $250000 USD per year
