Job Description

The Pipe Foreman will lead a heavy equipment and pipe-laying crew on civil construction projects with a focus on storm drainage systems. This role combines hands-on heavy equipment operation with day-to-day crew supervision, production tracking, and job site safety. The Pipe Foreman reads and interprets blueprints, coordinates closely with the Site Superintendent, and ensures that work meets quality, safety, and schedule expectations.

Responsibilities

• Organize and lead a pipe and heavy equipment crew in a safe, efficient, and productive manner.
• Track daily production, document progress, and complete all required paperwork accurately and on time.
• Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe job site at all times, enforcing safety practices and procedures.
• Lead by example in the field, actively teaching and mentoring crew members to build skills and productivity.
• Communicate daily production goals to the crew and hold team members accountable for meeting those goals.
• Work closely with the Site Superintendent to coordinate work activities, resolve field issues, and align on project priorities.
• Follow all company policies, procedures, and operational standards while performing and directing work.
• Read and interpret blueprints, plans, and specifications to lay out work and guide crew activities.
• Oversee and participate in the installation of storm drainage pipe and related drainage infrastructure.
• Operate and direct the operation of heavy equipment, including dozers, track hoes, graders, excavators, backhoes, skid steers, loaders, and front-end loaders, as needed to support crew productivity.
• Utilize GPS systems (such as Trimble or TopCon) in the field to ensure accurate grades, alignments, and pipe installation.
• Coordinate excavation, pipe laying, and backfilling activities to meet project deadlines and completion dates.
• Monitor work progress against schedule and adjust crew assignments or methods to keep the project on track.
• Identify potential issues related to stormwater and drainage during construction and communicate them promptly for resolution.
• Ensure all work complies with project specifications, quality standards, and applicable regulations.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 5+ years of experience managing a heavy equipment operating crew in a construction environment.
• Proven ability to lead and organize a crew in the field, demonstrating strong leadership abilities and accountability.
• Hands-on heavy equipment operation skills, with the ability to run multiple pieces of equipment (including dozer, track hoe, and grader) at a high level.
• Experience working with storm drainage pipe and stormwater drainage systems.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction plans, and civil drawings.
• Strong construction management understanding related to excavation, pipe laying, and civil site work.
• Heavy equipment operation experience across excavators, dozers, backhoes, skid steers, loaders, front-end loaders, and track hoes.
• Working experience with GPS systems, including Trimble and/or TopCon, for grading and layout.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly with crew members and site leadership.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including cold and extreme heat, while maintaining safety and productivity.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in civil construction, including excavation and pipe laying for stormwater and drainage projects.
• Experience in construction management practices related to scheduling, production tracking, and crew coordination.
• Experience operating a variety of heavy equipment such as excavators, dozers, backhoes, skid steers, loaders, front-end loaders, and track hoes.
• Familiarity with storm drain and stormwater systems, including drainage layout and installation best practices.
• Strong problem-solving skills to address field challenges and adjust work plans as needed.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with a Site Superintendent and other project stakeholders.
• Leadership experience in heavy equipment operations, even without prior Superintendent title, with evidence of team guidance and mentoring.
• Commitment to maintaining a safe work environment and enforcing safety standards on site.

Work Environment

This is a field-based role in heavy civil construction, working primarily outdoors on active job sites. The Pipe Foreman spends most of the day on site, leading crews and operating or overseeing heavy equipment such as excavators, dozers, graders, backhoes, skid steers, loaders, front-end loaders, and track hoes. Work involves storm drainage and stormwater systems, excavation, and pipe laying, often using GPS technology such as Trimble or TopCon to guide grading and installation. The position requires working in all weather conditions, including cold, heat, and other environmental elements commonly encountered on construction sites. The environment is fast-paced and production-driven, with a focus on meeting project deadlines and completion dates while maintaining high safety and quality standards. Typical attire is practical construction workwear suitable for outdoor conditions and compliant with safety requirements, including appropriate personal protective equipment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of North Charleston, SC.

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $38.00/hr.
