IP Counsel

Responsibilities Managing the Broad Institute’s intellectual property ("IP") portfolio: identifying scientific and technical discoveries for potential patent protection and evaluating their patentability, protection, and commercial applications. Ensuring IP strategy aligns with overall strategic goals and institutional objectives. Managing the patenting process for jointly owned inventions, coordinating with partner institutions and their tech transfer offices. Maintaining oversight of outside counsel and supervising all deliverables to meet institutional strategy and risk tolerance. Advising on IP matters, directing legal work, and overseeing the engagement of outside legal experts when needed. Partnering with business development and legal transaction teams to support license, option, sponsored research, and collaboration agreements. Assisting Alliance Managers in partnership management. Providing guidance and education to the institutional community on IP matters and responding to questions/issues. Interacting closely with scientific staff, including principal investigators, postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students, and others. Handling additional projects or duties as requested or required. Minimum Qualifications Registered U.S. patent attorney. At least five (5) years of experience as an attorney in U.S. and international biotechnology patent prosecution, with formal prosecution training, drafting of patent applications, correspondence with the USPTO, and direct client management. Preferred Qualifications Ph.D. or P.Eng. in the life sciences desirable, but not required; experience can substitute. Strong chemistry background; experience in biochemistry, biophysics, cellular/chemical biology, genomics, immunology, microbiology, systems biology, pharmacology, neuroscience, organic chemistry, synthetic biology, or biomedical/chemical engineering. Experience in licensing and supporting licensing negotiations of life science technologies. Academic or pharma/biotech industry life science research experience preferred. Competencies Outstanding written and oral communication skills and ability to explain complex issues clearly. Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines. Client service experience and ability to interact with faculty, students, VCs, attorneys, IP professionals, industry executives, and staff at all levels in a fast‑paced environment. Entrepreneurial, proactive, collaborative, self‑starter, and highly independent. Passion for science and its application to improve public health. the Broad will not provide sponsorship for this position. Pay Range: $142,000.00 / yr – $199,333.00 / yr.
