POSITION OVERVIEW The United States Probation and Pretrial Services Office of the U.S. District Court, District of Arizona, is seeking Probation Officer Assistant(s) in Phoenix, Tucson, Flagstaff, and Yuma. The officer assistant serves in a judiciary law enforcement position, under the direction and guidance of a Supervisory Probation Officer. The incumbent will provide technical support and assistance to probation officers in a wide range of areas, including assisting with compiling information for investigations; assisting with supervision of persons under supervision; preparing and drafting reports and correspondence; appearing in court for violation proceedings and sentencings; and related duties. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES Draft and submit selected reports and maintain related investigative files and case records. Observe and report to officers/supervisors on the lifestyle, personal problems, and needs of persons under supervision. Assist probation officers in the performance of presentence and or bail investigations, including compiling criminal histories/profiles, running record checks through local and national databases and files, conducting inquiries with collateral agencies, and similar activities. Visit or contact various local, state, and national law enforcement and regulatory agencies to collect and record information. Provide officers with verifiable and supportable documentation to assist in completion of probation reports. Schedule, conduct and monitor urinalysis collection from defendants and persons under supervision, following established procedures and protocols. Maintain paper and computerized records of test results. Inform officers regarding test results. Maintain and mail or transport tests and materials to laboratories for confirmation. Maintain chain of custody of urinalysis testing materials. Maintain inventory of supplies. Enter data and information into the office’s computerized database system.. Testify, as necessary, before the court or Parole Commission. Run periodic record checks on a caseload of deportation cases. Photograph and fingerprint persons under supervision. Cover court hearings and maintain chronological records. Where applicable, may serve as an interpreter for officers and for non-English speaking defendants or family members as needed. Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS The successful applicant must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a field of academic study, such as criminal justice, criminology, psychology, sociology, human relations, or business or public administration, and one year of specialized experience equivalent to the CL-23 to work at the CL-24. Applicants must be physically capable, have good vision and normal hearing ability. First-time appointees must not have reached their 37th birthday at the time of appointment. Applicants age 37 or over with previous federal hazardous duty experience under the Civil Service Retirement System or the Federal Employees’ Retirement System may be eligible for appointment. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Preference will be given to those applicants that have the ability to communicate effectively in Spanish. Preference will be given to those applicants who possess a master’s degree or have completed course work toward a master’s degree. SELECTION PROCESS Prior to appointment, the selectee considered for the position will be required to submit credit reports and be subject to a criminal records check. The selectee will also undergo a medical examination and drug screening. Upon successful completion of the medical examination and drug screening, the selectee may then be appointed provisionally, pending a favorable suitability determination by the court. In addition, as a condition of employment, the incumbent will be subject to ongoing random drug screening, updated background investigations every five years and, as deemed necessary by management for reasonable cause, may be subject to subsequent fitness-for-duty evaluations. The initial appointment to this position is provisional pending the successful completion of the required background checks and/or investigations. The position is subject to the mandatory electronic fund transfer (EFT) participation for payment of net pay (i.e. Direct Deposit). In most cases, this means that an offer of employment cannot be made unless the candidate is a lawful permanent resident who is seeking U.S. citizenship as explained below. Non-citizens who have not been permanent residents for five years will be required to execute an affidavit that they intend to apply for citizenship when they become eligible to do so.
