Police Officer

Job Overview The purpose of this classification is to provide services in order to protect life and property, to respond to the needs of the general public, to deter criminal activity within the community, to enforce all state and local ordinances and laws, and protect the constitutional rights of all citizens. Responsibilities Enforce all city and state codes, ordinances, laws and regulations to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security. Maintain visibility by patrolling assigned area – city streets, parks, neighborhoods, and businesses – to ensure security. Perform surveillance of various locations and criminal suspects; collect and review data; develop trends and patterns; file intelligence reports. Investigate reported crimes; interview victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informants; process and maintain crime scenes; gather, prepare, protect, and submit evidence to the crime lab. Obtain warrants; perform search operations; locate missing persons. Determine probable cause to search and/or reasonable suspicion to detain; pursue fleeing suspects; arrest when necessary; process and transport prisoners. Respond to emergency calls; mediate disputes; advise suspects of rights. Assist fellow officers on domestic and theft calls; execute warrants; serve subpoenas; make traffic stops. Respond to accident calls; investigate; reconstruct serious injuries or fatal accidents; interview victims and witnesses; notify relatives as necessary. Direct traffic, administer emergency medical aid, manage dangerous situations during accidents, emergencies, and disasters; interact with EMT teams. Establish road blocks; administer field sobriety tests; identify wanted persons/vehicles; impound vehicles; assist stranded motorists; ensure roadways are clear of obstacles and hazards. Stop vehicles for traffic violations; issue citations and warnings. May perform special operations/detail activities such as SRT, drug task force, DUI task force, negotiations, juvenile, homicide, gang unit, narcotics, environmental protection, training, teaching, or other duties as assigned. Contact command and supervisory personnel for emergency response and critical incident communications. Identify illegal drugs and hazardous materials; maintain knowledge of prescription drugs. Enter and retrieve data to/from computer system: stolen property, arrest and wanted persons information, investigation data, criminal and driving record checks; review crime statistics. Assist with interdepartmental duties and city activities: working within school zones, directing traffic, assisting in animal control, providing security at city social events and athletic activities, special escorts, crowd and riot control, or other special assignments. Document case information; assist in prosecution; appear in court to present evidence and testimony. Respond to questions, complaints, and requests for information by telephone or in person from merchants, community and civic organizations, the general public, employees, superiors, and other individuals; take and relay messages; return calls as necessary. Attend community meetings and assist community activities, programs, and crime prevention; may promote and participate in DARE program. Exchange information with dispatchers, attorneys, court personnel, medical examiners, medical professionals, and other agencies. Maintain current field and code manuals, policies, procedures, employee handbooks, various maps, and related materials for reference and review. Attend shift meetings, seminars, and training sessions as required to maintain knowledge of departmental and city operations, to promote improved job performance, and to keep up with changing policies and laws. Compose and prepare a variety of forms, logs, requests, records, reports, correspondence, and documents associated with daily responsibilities; maintain administrative records and files. Cooperate with federal, state, and local law‑enforcement agencies and their officers or representatives for investigations within city jurisdiction. Qualifications High school diploma or GED required (no previous experience required). Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certification as a law‑enforcement officer; some experience preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license. Must be at least 20 years of age. Must be a U.S. citizen or possess resident status. Must pass and maintain current POST certification requirements. Must be qualified to operate a firearm. No felony or domestic violence convictions; no misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude. Must pass a drug and psychological screening and background investigation. Technical, Physical, and Cognitive Requirements Data Utilization: ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and analyze data, referencing established standards for interaction effects. Human Interaction: ability to apply persuasion principles and influence over others in a supervisory capacity. Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: ability to operate and control equipment requiring complex and rapid adjustments. Verbal Aptitude: ability to use a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information. Mathematical Aptitude: ability to perform basic arithmetic and record counts and measurements. Functional Reasoning: ability to interpret written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule instructions; exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet objectives. Situational Reasoning: ability to exercise decisiveness and creativity in critical and unexpected situations involving moderate risk. Additional Functions Maintains cleanliness of vehicle; requests service or repairs as needed; maintains weapons and equipment in functional and presentable condition; performs other related duties as required. ADA Compliance Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling moderately heavy objects (20–50 pounds). Sensory Requirements: ability to perceive and discriminate colors, sounds, odors, textures, and visual cues; ability to communicate orally. Environmental Factors: performance may involve exposure to adverse conditions—dirt, dust, pollen, odors, smoke, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature extremes, noise, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, chemicals, explosives, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
