Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (RN) for a 13-week contract assignment in Gardner, Massachusetts. This role is based in an acute care setting, providing comprehensive nursing care to a diverse adult patient population, including those recovering from surgical procedures.

The successful candidate will be responsible for applying the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care, ensuring adherence to established standards of practice and promoting patient safety and positive outcomes. This position requires strong clinical judgment, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to patient-centered care.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess, reassess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing interventions and patient care plans.
• Provide patient care in accordance with established standards of care, protocols, and policies.
• Ensure care respects patient dignity and promotes positive self-regard.
• Provide comprehensive patient and family education based on identified learning needs.
• Collaborate with the healthcare team to plan and prepare patients for discharge, incorporating necessary support systems.
• Appropriately delegate and supervise nursing interventions performed by other team members.
• Prioritize patient care, including recognizing the need for emergency intervention and seeking appropriate resources.
• Maintain thorough, timely, and accurate documentation of all pertinent data, interventions, and patient responses.
• Provide timely and comprehensive reports to ensure continuity of patient care.
• Promote professional development for self and colleagues, potentially functioning as a preceptor or trainer.
• Proactively identify risks to patient safety and opportunities to reduce medical errors.
• Identify ethical issues in care and contribute to the development of resolution plans.
• Safely administer medications and intravenous therapy according to physician orders and protocols.
• Assess and reassess patient pain levels, documenting responses and notifying physicians as needed.
• Obtain supporting information and complete documentation for medication reconciliation.
• Interpret and document patient cardiac rate, rhythm, and configuration, initiating treatment plans based on provider orders.
• Provide ongoing assessment and teaching to surgical patients and their families.
• Recognize normal and deviant progress patterns, reporting concerns to physicians in a timely manner.
• Utilize pain management devices and techniques to ensure proper pain relief.
• Set up, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment related to surgical patients, such as traction/orthopedic devices, feeding pumps, chest tubes, and drains.

Required Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

Preferred Qualifications

• 1 year of Medical-Surgical experience.
• 1 year of Telemetry experience.
• 1 year of Pediatric experience.

Skills & Competencies

• Clinical Skills: Comprehensive patient assessment, care planning, medication administration, IV therapy, pain management, cardiac monitoring and interpretation, surgical patient care, wound care, and equipment management (e.g., traction, orthopedic devices, feeding pumps, chest tubes, drains).

Licensing Requirements

• Current Massachusetts (MA) Registered Nurse (RN) license.

• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification preferred.
