Job Description
This phlebotomist role focuses on safely and accurately collecting, processing, and handling patient specimens while supporting smooth laboratory workflow. You will perform blood draws and other specimen collections, troubleshoot routine issues, assist with training, and recommend process improvements to ensure efficient, high-quality patient care in a clinical laboratory environment.
Responsibilities
This role is based in a clinical laboratory environment within a large healthcare organization that offers opportunities for growth and development. You will work around standard laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and specimen storage units, and you will handle blood and other biological specimens while following strict safety and regulatory protocols. The setting is fast-paced and team-oriented, with regular interaction with clinical staff and patients. You will attend annual department trainings and use computer systems, including Microsoft Office Suite, to support documentation, reporting, and communication.

Job Description
This phlebotomist role focuses on safely and accurately collecting, processing, and handling patient specimens while supporting smooth laboratory workflow. You will perform blood draws and other specimen collections, troubleshoot routine issues, assist with training, and recommend process improvements to ensure efficient, high-quality patient care in a clinical laboratory environment.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner.
- Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.
- Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients, ensuring they understand what to expect.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate patient and test identification.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the specific test orders.
- Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport, following required procedures to maintain specimen integrity.
- Store specimen samples at the appropriate temperature and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes, following protocol for transport and processing.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory procedures.
- Update patient information accurately in the system and ensure records remain current and complete.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
- Attend annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of laboratory policies and procedures.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries in a professional and accurate manner.
- Assist with troubleshooting routine workflow issues and make recommendations to improve processes and efficiency.
- Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy and specimen handling techniques when needed.
- Demonstrated experience performing blood draws and venipuncture in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital environment.
- Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including the use of straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Experience with specimen collection, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storage according to test requirements.
- Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify orders against scripts or computer labels.
- Knowledge of specimen processing procedures, including packaging and transport requirements to maintain specimen integrity.
- Understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations and commitment to compliance with all safety and regulatory standards.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Overall 2-4 years of experience, including relevant laboratory or clinical experience.
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) or equivalent phlebotomy certification.
- Experience working in a clinical laboratory setting.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients.
- Ability to read and relay laboratory results accurately over the phone.
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills to ensure accurate labeling, documentation, and record keeping.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high quality and safety standards.
