Job Summary The Kaiser Permanente Pharmacy Technician performs functions that support the daily workflow of the pharmacy, ensuring the timely and appropriate distribution of drug therapy in compliance with state and federal laws and Kaiser Permanente policies and procedures. Essential Responsibilities Support daily pharmacy workflow by typing new prescriptions, processing refill prescriptions, entering prescription data, counting and pouring medications, prepackaging and labeling, stocking shelves, filing prescriptions, performing inventory functions, and releasing refill medications and OTC products to patients. Handle non‑professional phone calls, including refill requests and authorizations from prescribers, triaging calls to the appropriate person, and contacting prescribers for refill authorization. Operate cashiering processes and procedures, adhering to Kaiser Permanente Cash Security and Compliance standards. Read, interpret, and fill prescription orders with correct medications and quantities, accurately calculate dosages based on the patient’s weight. Ensure patient safety and provide excellent customer service by performing safety checks, resolving and reporting unusual occurrences, following standard work for greeting patients, and providing service recovery when appropriate. Demonstrate dedication to evidence‑based medicine by staying current on clinical initiatives and priorities, identifying specific issues, and bringing them to the pharmacist’s attention (e.g., high‑risk meds, glucose strips, preferred drugs). Adhere to Kaiser Permanente policies, procedures, and protocols for medication formularies, maintaining current knowledge of basic drug information and medical terminology. Basic Qualifications Completion of an approved pharmacy technician training program or equivalent to obtain Department of Health Pharmacy Technician Certification by hire. Pharmacy Technician Certification (Washington) required at hire. Additional Requirements Ability to use available resources and tools efficiently and effectively. Knowledge of pharmacy law and its standards of practice. Skill in compounding extemporaneous entities. Ability to identify specified issues and bring them to the attention of the pharmacist. Problem‑solving skills to work with patients and other health care providers. Verbal and written communication skills. Customer service skills. Ability to work effectively as a member of a team. Ability to perform pharmaceutical calculations and identify drug names, with knowledge of most common uses for pharmaceuticals. Preferred Qualifications One or more years of pharmacy technician experience. Two or more years of IV experience. Two or more years of warehouse experience. Ability to use available resources and tools efficiently and effectively.
