Unit Coordinator, Emergency Department- 36 hrs, Rotating/Evenings

Emergency Department | Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital – Milton Schedule 36 hours (3, 12 hour shifts). 11a-11p and 3p-3a with weekend rotations. What You’ll Do As an Emergency Department Unit Coordinator, you will: Provide administrative support to clinical staff, patients, and families. Manage front desk operations, including communication, coordination, and information flow. Support department efficiency and patient throughput to maintain a smooth care experience. Collaborate closely with the Charge Nurse and care team to prioritize tasks and respond to real‑time needs. Serve as a central point of contact, ensuring the team stays informed, organized, and connected. Your role is essential in supporting both patient care delivery and the overall operations of the department. Duties and Responsibilities Answer phones in compliance with hospital policies and procedures. Communicate effectively with patients and their families where appropriate. Assemble patient medical records and update patient information in the hospital computer system. Enter billing charges for patients in the computer system. Retrieve appropriate patient medical records and test results. Send specimens to the laboratory and order entry in the computer system as needed. Demonstrate the skills and judgment necessary to provide direct care to patients under the direction of licensed personnel. May participate in the delivery of emergency care under the direction of a registered nurse or physician. Consider specific cultural beliefs and practices when caring for patients; utilize interpreter services for patients with limited English proficiency. Collaborate, cooperate, and communicate with other health care providers to ensure quality and continuity of care. Provide care appropriate to the age groups of patients regularly served; seek assistance for resources of other age groups that need care. Maintain a safe work environment within the service area and actively participate in hospital safety programs and initiatives. Adhere to universal precautions. Participate in unit-based Q.I., performance improvement studies and unit meetings. Attend and/or participate in in‑house or outside training programs to improve and augment skills and knowledge. Assist in ordering and maintaining adequate levels of supplies as assigned by the Director, Surgical Services, or designee. Communicate arrival times for all surgical patients via pre‑op phone calls. Process patients and patients' representatives upon arrival to the unit. Assist with transport of patients leaving the area when necessary. Input data worksheets. May arrange ambulance transport for patients. Work effectively with physicians who utilize the unit. Communicate effectively with the physicians' office staff when necessary. Additional Requirements May be required to perform similar or related duties as may be necessary on an emergency basis or as designated by the department or supervisor. The nature of the tasks may expose employees to blood and body fluids; employees are required to follow standard infection control precautions. Qualifications High school completion plus 3 to 12 months of related experience. Excellent communication skills and ability to type. Ability to work in a busy environment. Medical terminology knowledge preferred. Experience with Microsoft 365 and Epic systems preferred. Pay Range $19.50 – $26.24 per hour. The pay range listed is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably expects to pay at this time. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate based on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime and other applicable practices in accordance with the law.
