Equipment Mechanic - Solid Waste and Recycling

Non-exempt (compensatory and/or overtime eligible; additional compensation to include tool allowance); full-time; 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday; 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.; full benefits This skilled position is responsible for the complex repair, adjustment and maintenance of trucks, heavy equipment and other equipment (large and small) used by the Division of Solid Waste and Recycling (DSWR). Supervision is received from the Landfill Supervisor through the Division Director. NOTE: The upper pay range reflects possible wage rates for internal County transfers and promotions, which are calculated per County policy. For external hires, offers are made at the base wage rate, with limited exception. Inspect, repair and/or replace heavy equipment components and parts Inspect, repair and/or replace brakes, suspension parts and exhaust systems Perform general tune-ups and fuel system repairs and diagnostics for gasoline systems (carburetor and fuel injection) and diesel systems Use computerized vehicle analysis equipment to diagnose electronic systems Repair/charge air conditioning systems; use a coolant recycling system Diagnose and repair electrical systems and accessories Provide general maintenance care for all types of DSWR vehicles and equipment Diagnose and repair hydraulic cylinders and systems Utilize a computerized system to track work orders and complete records of work performed, parts used, etc. Perform other related duties as required To perform this job successfully, an employee must be able to perform all essential functions satisfactorily. High school diploma or equivalent Minimum of 3 years of work experience in heavy equipment operation and repair or a related field Possession of a valid driver's license

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

A successful incumbent operating in this role displays the following: Advanced knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods and techniques utilized in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment Advanced knowledge of potential hazards associated with this type of work and appropriate safety precautions Knowledge of equipment and components in order to identify, inspect, and repair them Knowledge of landscaping and snow removal equipment Skill in repairing equipment and materials Skill in welding and metal fabrication using both stick and MIG welders Skill in purchasing and maintaining a budget Effective written and spoken (English) communication skills, including the ability to understand and follow spoken and written instructions and to accurately complete documentation of work performed Ability to maintain County Authorized Driver privileges Ability to obtain and maintain required licenses Ability to operate all Division equipment in order to diagnose issues and make repairs Ability to effectively detect and diagnose repair problems, and perform complex repairs and adjustments to various types of heavy equipment, heavy trucks and other equipment Ability to effectively troubleshoot, repair and/or rebuild hydraulic components Ability to effectively utilize and maintain coolant recycling equipment, computerized vehicle analysis systems and other new technology as needed Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public Ability to obtain a valid Commercial class A driver's license with airbrake and tanker endorsements within 6 months of hire

PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:

Welding work experience Current possession of a valid Commercial driver's license with airbrake and tanker endorsements

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS:

While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly stoop/kneel/crouch, lift up to and over 50 pounds, push up to and over 40 pounds, pull up to and over 40 pounds, reach and perform repetitive motions; and frequently sit, walk, climb/ascending or descending, crawl and drive While working in this position the employee is required to constantly work indoors, outdoors, in hot temperatures above 100 degrees, in cold temperatures below 32 degrees, work in dirty, dusty, noisy conditions, work in confined spaces, near machinery, exposed to chemical and fumes, potentially exposed to infectious diseases and required to wear protective equipment; frequently walk on uneven ground and work at heights Working conditions for this position may include exposure to allergens, dust and fumes found in refuse, recyclable materials and yard waste Employees in this classification are designated as Essential. An Essential Employee means the employee is considered necessary for the operation of County services. Essential Employees are required to report to work in the event of a weather incident, general emergency, or disasters when County offices are closed.
