Position Summary Midwest Drywall is seeking a dependable and motivated Shop & Fleet Mechanic Intern to support daily operations within our shop and fleet maintenance operations. This role reports directly to the Fleet Manager and is ideal for someone pursuing a career in mechanics, diesel technology, or equipment maintenance with an interest in the construction industry. This hands‑on position focuses on assisting with vehicle and equipment maintenance, inspections & preventive maintenance, and shop operations, while providing exposure to fleet management practices and field support. Key Responsibilities Assist with basic mechanical work on company vehicles, trucks, and construction equipment Support preventative maintenance tasks, including: Oil changes and fluid checks Tire inspections and rotations Battery testing and replacement Greasing and general equipment upkeep Help perform and document vehicle and equipment inspections Assist with diagnosing minor mechanical issues under supervision Maintain and organize tools, parts, and shop equipment Support repair preparation, including staging parts and tools Clean, wash, and prepare vehicles and equipment for job site use Assist with maintaining accurate maintenance logs and service records Help ensure shop safety, cleanliness, and organization standards are met Provide occasional support with equipment delivery, pickup, and job site needs Assist with tool and equipment check‑in/check‑out as needed Assist with organizing and maintaining the shop, yard, and warehouse areas Follow all shop safety procedures and PPE requirements Support the Fleet Manager with special projects and fleet‑related tasks Other duties as assigned Qualifications High school diploma or currently enrolled in high school, trade school, or college Willingness to learn and work in a hands‑on shop environment Ability to follow direction and work independently or on a team Basic organizational and communication skills Ability to perform physical tasks (lifting up to 50 lbs, standing, bending, etc.) Preferred Enrollment in or completion of a diesel mechanic, automotive, or trade program Prior experience working with vehicles, equipment, or tools Basic understanding of mechanical systems and maintenance practices Familiarity with hand and power tools Valid driver’s license Forklift certification or willingness to obtain What You’ll Gain Hands‑on experience working on construction fleet vehicles and equipment Exposure to real‑world mechanical troubleshooting and maintenance workflows Opportunity to build foundational skills in diesel and equipment mechanics Direct mentorship from the Fleet Manager and experienced shop personnel Insight into how fleet operations support large‑scale construction projects This position operates primarily in a shop and yard environment with exposure to vehicles, heavy equipment, tools, noise, and varying weather conditions.
