Job Description Job Title: Staff Attorney Job Type: Full-time, 100% in person Pay: $90,000 – $120,000 Employer Description: The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida is a federally recognized Native American Tribe located between Miami and Naples, Florida, in commuting distance of both coasts. As a consequence of its unique legal status, the Tribe is a sovereign “domestic dependent nation” that can regulate its own lands and waters. The Tribe administers nearly 500,000 acres of traditional lands, mostly within the Everglades and Big Cypress wetlands, and has a variety of revenue-generating enterprises, including a casino, resort, golf course, ecotourism, and agricultural leases, mostly within Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. The Tribe has approximately 600 citizens, and administrative headquarters are located in the Miccosukee Reserved Area within Everglades National Park, at 3770 Old Tamiami Trail, Miami, FL 33194. Position Description: The Office of the General Counsel of the Miccosukee Tribe provides legal services to the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, including Tribal leadership, the Business Council, Tribal departments, Tribal enterprises, and members of the Miccosukee community. We are seeking a Staff Attorney to complement the existing Legal Department and add legal capacity, support, and perspective to the team. The ideal candidate will be able to manage projects independently, provide thoughtful legal analysis, communicate clearly, and follow through on deadlines, while also understanding the importance of teamwork, discretion, coordination, and good judgment within a small legal office. The candidate should be respectful of the unique cultural, governmental, and community-centered environment of a sovereign Tribal Nation. Prior experience in Tribal law is helpful but not required; willingness to learn and the ability to provide practical legal support are paramount. Primary Responsibilities Reviewing, drafting, and revising contracts, agreements, memoranda, correspondence, resolutions, and other legal documents. Conducting legal research and preparing practical legal analysis for the General Counsel, Tribal leadership, departments, and enterprises. Managing assigned matters independently while keeping the General Counsel informed of material issues, deadlines, and risks. Supporting Tribal government operations, including matters involving departments, enterprises, policies, procedures, governance, and community needs. Assisting with claims, disputes, regulatory matters, procurement issues, records requests, and other legal or operational matters as assigned. Coordinating with outside counsel, agencies, vendors, and internal departments as directed. Helping develop and maintain organized legal files, templates, processes, and tracking systems. Providing practical, solution-oriented legal support that reflects the Tribe’s status as a sovereign Tribal Nation. Working collaboratively with the Legal Department and other Tribal staff in a professional, respectful, and team-oriented manner. Performing other duties as assigned by the General Counsel. Ideal Candidate Qualities The Legal Department is seeking an attorney who is collaborative, respectful, practical, organized, responsive, discreet, and team-oriented. The ideal candidate should be confident enough to take ownership of assigned matters, yet humble enough to ask questions, accept direction, and elevate issues when appropriate. Qualifications Attorney with approximately 2–5 years of experience preferred, primarily in contracts, business transactions, governmental operations, litigation support, administrative law, employment matters, procurement, regulatory matters, or a related area. Must be licensed by the Florida Bar or willing and able to obtain Florida Bar licensure within 1 year of relocation. Experience in Tribal law, Indian gaming, or Tribal jurisdictions preferred but not required. Strong analytical, organizational, writing, and communication skills required. Ability to provide practical legal guidance while advancing and protecting the interests of the Tribe. Ability to work independently while also functioning as part of a small, collaborative Legal Department. Ability to handle confidential and sensitive matters with discretion and good judgment. Must be willing to work 100% in person at the Miccosukee Administration Building in the Central Everglades. Must reside in Collier, Miami‑Dade, Monroe, or Broward County, or be willing to relocate or commute within a reasonable time after hiring. Work Location This position is based at the Miccosukee Administration Building in the Central Everglades, approximately 18 miles west of the Miccosukee Casino. This is a full-time, 100% in-person position. Remote or hybrid work is not available for this role. Application Materials Applicants should submit a resume and writing sample.
