Python Backend Developer Intern - Energy Flexibility Platform

Python Backend Developer Intern – Energy Flexibility Platform Are you passionate about building cloud software that helps shape the energy transition? Do you want to contribute your Python skills to the launch of a brand-new product? Here's the right internship opportunity for you! Join our team, Autonomous Control and Operations, located in Princeton, NJ, for a 3 – 6 month internship and help us build a new Energy Flexibility Platform for Siemens. Our platform enables Siemens customers to participate in energy markets with their power generation and storage assets. As part of a small, interdisciplinary team of software engineers, power systems experts, and energy market specialists, you will develop and maintain the REST APIs at the heart of the platform, connecting data from a variety of sources to the algorithms that consume it. Working on a product in its early stages means your code ships to real customers, and you will see directly how a well-designed endpoint or a clean database migration translates into value for grid operators and asset owners. During this internship, you will experience the full engineering lifecycle of a modern cloud product: writing Python services with FastAPI and SQLAlchemy, extending automated tests, keeping OpenAPI specifications in step with the implementation, and shipping through containerized CI/CD pipelines to AWS. Transform the everyday with us! In this role, you will work on-site in Princeton, NJ. Our team values clean, well-tested code and open technical discussion. You will be encouraged to ask questions, challenge designs, and bring your own ideas, and you will be supported by senior engineers who are invested in your growth. Our Princeton facility is recognized for providing a stimulating environment for highly talented and self-motivated students. An internship with Siemens is a great opportunity for students to gain real-world experience in a diverse, dynamic work environment at the intersection of software engineering and the future of energy. #Transformtheeveryday Key responsibilities: Develop and maintain REST API endpoints for a cloud-based energy flexibility platform using Python Integrate with third-party REST APIs, including authentication, retries, and error handling Write and expand automated unit and integration tests to improve code quality and coverage Keep API specifications (OpenAPI) and technical documentation in sync with the implementation Implement database schema changes and migrations under the guidance of senior engineers Take part in code reviews and team discussions on design and implementation Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's or master's degree student enrolled in a Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or closely related program Strong Python fundamentals: writing functions and classes, consistent use of type hints, and exception handling Experience with relational databases and SQL, including schema design and writing queries Understanding of REST APIs, and JSON, including status codes, headers and concurrency control (e.g. ETag / If-Match), and reading API specifications Hands-on experience with software development best practices: version control (Git), unit testing, and technical documentation Proficiency in English, both written and verbal Legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship now or in the future.
