POSITION PROPERTIES Position Title: Assistant Life and Safety Specialist Schedule / Grade: 259 Days SalaryGrade 2 Job Code: FLSA Exempt: Yes Calendar: ADSUP-S Benefits: Eligible (Retirees not Benefit eligible) Contract Type: Notification Bargaining Unit: None Revised Date 05/12/2026 PURPOSE The Columbia Public Schools (CPS) Assistant Life & Safety Specialist will use communication, technical knowledge, problem solving and effective interpersonal skills to deliver the highest level of customer service. The position will help plan, coordinate, and implement the organization’s physical security needs, including the installation of security cameras, software, access control integration, and Raptor visitor management. It collaborates with Safety, Security, and Technology Services to support and enhance a safe, secure learning environment. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES Install and maintain security cameras, alarm devices, buzzer‑controlled doors, Raptor visitor management, and related equipment, following infrastructure layouts and building plans. Perform signal verification, system testing, and troubleshooting. Assist customers with security‑related downloads and device configuration as needed. Educate and train customers on security system operation and functionality. Provide technical support for security DVRs, Key Fob system, and emergency management systems. Work closely with CPS Security professionals to ensure building security systems are in good working order. Configure, program, and assist maintenance of key Fob system for optimal performance and key holder authentication. Load software applications packages as needed for security systems. Troubleshoot security camera and/or NVR issues and advise on repair and maintenance needs. Perform bench repairs on security‑related equipment as needed. Assist with scheduled security equipment relocation / new equipment. Assist with internal training / troubleshooting techniques on security hardware and peripheral basics. Troubleshoot and correct security equipment network connectivity issues. Mount and fasten control panels, door and window contacts, sensors, and video cameras, and attach electrical to connect all components. Test and repair circuits and sensors, following wiring and system specifications. Test backup batteries, keypad programming, sirens, and all security features to ensure proper functioning and diagnose malfunctions. Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve security hardware, software, and basic network related problems for end‑users of the network. Monitor system and building access by checking ID status; verifying owner identity. Provide information by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data and trends. Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities. Keep informed of new products and developments and provide advice regarding options. Request orders for replacement parts. Understand and adhere to Board policies and procedures. Perform other duties as necessary to support the mission and vision of the Columbia Public School District under the supervision of the Director of Safety and Security. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS Reports To: Life & Safety Specialist Supervises: None QUALIFICATIONS Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems or a combination of education, certifications, and related work experience; must have a basic understanding of IPv4 and how to assign a computer an IP address. Preferred: 5+ years related work experience. Ideal candidate can demonstrate ability to learn new technical skills quickly and solve/address complex technical problems effectively, while directing the work of others. Strong communication, time management and organizational skills. Strong working knowledge of networking, client environments, and wireless. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasoning: Define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, interpret instructions presented in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form, and demonstrate executive functions such as planning, organizing, remembering, and regulating information. Technology: Demonstrate strong computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, online reports, and learn new systems and software. Other Skills: Demonstrate excellent listening, interpersonal, written, and oral skills, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, maintain collegial relationships, maintain a positive relationship with members of the community, and effectively manage conflict. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Move about, talk, and hear; close vision required for long periods at computer screen; frequent bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and working on ladders; travel between district facilities. ATTENDANCE Consistent and regular attendance is essential. Expected to attend Board meetings and other District events throughout the community as needed. CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT Work may involve a typical office environment and/or school settings; many staff and students may be present and speaking simultaneously; required to work irregular or extended hours, including evenings and weekends as needed and determined by supervisor.
