Assistant City Engineer

Overview The City of Caldwell is looking for an Assistant City Engineer to assist in the management of the Engineering Department and development of construction and Local Improvement District projects. This exempt position requires direct supervision by the City Engineer and may involve supervising department employees. The role is performed in a general office environment. Responsibilities Assist with the direction of the Engineering Department, including employee supervision, budgeting, control of expenditures, and task scheduling. Assist with the development of Local Improvement District resolutions and ordinances, cost estimates, legal descriptions, and supporting documentation for Council consideration. Coordinate resolution of problems with company engineers and representatives. Assist Project/Associate Engineers in developing designs, plans, specifications, and other working papers for proposed engineering, construction, maintenance, and improvement projects. Assist with design, cost estimating, bidding, construction document preparation, and manage construction of public works projects. Coordinate accounting and financial requirements with contractors to finalize projects. Provide engineering comments on subdivision and use permits. Perform subdivision plan review and construction inspection and testing. Develop, manage, and coordinate material testing services by staff and external laboratories. Respond to questions, concerns, and complaints from internal and external customers about bid processes, program processes, and departmental policies. Provide training and demonstrations for new employees in similar positions. Maintain accurate communication with supervisors and stakeholders about work progress and potential problems. Attend meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions to stay current on industry practices. Respond to citizen inquiries in a courteous and timely manner. Train, assign, prioritize, supervise, motivate, and evaluate assigned employees, including performance‑based pay program, goal setting, KRA monitoring, and completion. Communicate and coordinate with appropriate others to maximize interdepartmental effectiveness and efficiency. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university. Extensive experience in public works engineering and water resources, or an equivalent combination of experience and training. Successful completion of a pre‑employment background check and drug test, including prescription medications. Licenses, Certifications and Other Requirements Licensed Professional Engineer issued by the State of Idaho. Valid driver’s license.
