ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

Mission: Improve patient care by promoting research, education, and best practices in treatment for atopic dermatitis in people worldwide.

Reports To: Board of Directors (via the President)

Position Type: Chief Staff Executive / Full-Time Employee

Location: Virtual

The IEC is made up of two organizations:

• the IEC, a 501(c)(6) nonprofit professional organization
• the IEC Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization.

Most of the business of the IEC is conducted through the IEC 501(c)(6) organization. A shared Board of Directors governs both organizations.

Management/leadership comprises the Board of Directors and the Chief Executive Officer (the only direct employee of the organization).

Organizational support is provided through an outsourced arrangement at the discretion of the Chief Executive Officer.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) serves as the chief staff executive and strategic leader of the International Eczema Council (IEC) and the IEC Foundation. The CEO is responsible for advancing the organization's global mission to improve patient care by promoting research, education, and best practices in the treatment of atopic dermatitis.

Working in close partnership with the President, Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and external stakeholders, the CEO provides total operational, financial, and strategic leadership. The CEO will ensure the effective implementation of the organization’s priorities while maintaining strong relationships with members, researchers, pharmaceutical and other industry partners, and external stakeholders.

A key responsibility will be strengthening the organizations’ long-term financial sustainability through thoughtful fiscal management, revenue diversification, fundraising, and development of strategic partnerships. The CEO will also foster an effective and collaborative organizational culture, support the work of volunteer leaders and committees, and ensure that the IEC and IEC Foundation are well positioned to adapt to changes in the global healthcare and atopic dermatitis landscape.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Strategic Leadership & Growth

• Strategic Planning: Lead the development, execution, and 3-year cyclical evaluation of the organization's strategic plan.
• Global Expansion: Identify and capture opportunities to expand IEC's global influence, membership footprint, and strategic alliances.
• Trend Monitoring: Track macro trends across global healthcare, dermatology, allergy, clinical research, and association (medical society) management.
• Mission Alignment: Ensure all operational resources, educational programs, and research initiatives remain strictly aligned with core organizational values.

2. Board Governance & Leadership Support

• Board Partnership: Serve as the primary strategic advisor and liaison to the President, Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and officers.
• Ex-Officio Role: Serve as an ex-officio, non-voting member of the Board of Directors and all standing committees.
• Governance Best Practices: Guide volunteer leaders regarding fiduciary duties, governance, risk mitigation, nonprofit regulations and fundraising.
• Meeting Facilitation: Partner with the President and President-elect to plan agendas, organize monthly teleconferences, and execute quarterly/annual Board meetings.

3. Financial Management & Fiduciary Oversight

• Budgeting: Develop, update, and manage the annual operational and capital budgets in collaboration with the Treasurer and Finance Committee.
• Fiscal Controls: Maintain complete and accurate financial records following an accrual accounting process.
• Reporting: Prepare and present quarterly profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and quarterly financial forecasts to leadership.
• Risk & Asset Protection: Oversee investments, corporate audits, contracts, and internal financial controls.

4. Sponsorship & Business Development

• Fundraising Strategy: Design and implement a robust, diversified global fundraising strategy across corporate, individual, and foundation sectors.
• Sponsor Relations: Cultivate, strengthen, and retain multi-year commitments with existing and new corporate industry partners.
• Revenue Models: Drive alternative, project-related revenue generation streams while maintaining absolute organizational independence and scientific credibility.

5. Program & Operational Operations

• Operational Oversight: Supervise day-to-day operations, workflows, and communication strategies of both the 501(c)(6) Council and the 501(c)(3) Foundation.
• Vendor Management: Select and manage outsourced business vendors and service providers.
• Event Execution: Oversee the planning and delivery of international symposia, congresses, fellowships, educational programs, and scientific publications.
• Outsourced Support: Oversee external administrative and operational support and ensure effective service delivery.

6. Staff Leadership & Culture

• Personnel Management: Retain full authority over staff hiring, assignments, promotions, compensation adjustments, and terminations within budget.
• Performance Evaluations: Establish clear key performance indicators and conduct annual evaluations for all internal and supporting staff.
• Culture Building: Foster a mission-driven, highly collaborative, transparent, and accountable workflow culture.

7. Membership Growth & External Advocacy

• Global Recruitment: Drive initiatives to recruit, engage, and retain global Councilors, Associates, and Industry Partners.
• Spokesperson Duties: Serve as the principal international ambassador and authorized media spokesperson for the IEC.
• Ecosystem Partnerships: Build collaborative bridges with global medical societies, skin health organizations, and patient advocacy networks.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• Education: Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree (MBA, MHA, or equivalent) preferred.
• Experience: Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible executive leadership experience within a nonprofit, professional medical society, or healthcare association.
• Governance Expertise: Proven track record of working effectively with volunteer leaders, boards, and complex committee structures, including building strong, productive relationships with a president and board.
• Financial Acumen: Deep experience constructing multi-tiered operational budgets, reviewing financial statements, managing organizational finances, and guiding fiscal strategy.
• Fundraising Success: Documented success in corporate sponsorship development, grant writing, and relationship management, with the ability to build productive relationships between physician leadership and pharmaceutical and other industry partners.

COMPENSATION

The salary range for this position is between $150,000 and $175,000 and will be commensurate with relevant experience, demonstrated expertise, and other applicable considerations.
