Senior Manager, Data Engineering

This role is responsible for creating, managing, and optimizing data engineering pipelines, managing data platform operations, and partnering closely with stakeholders to drive requirements-gathering and defining data solution architecture. This is a hands-on role that creates, drives, and tracks project plans for data platform and solutions delivery (including, but not limited to, ETL/Extract-Transform-Load, pipelines, data models, and monitoring controls) and leads sprint planning and completion to meet business needs while implementing and continuously improving solutions. The Senior Manager, Data Engineering reports to the Senior Director of Data Management & Governance.

Responsibilities include owning and driving the end-to-end delivery of data architecture and pipeline solutions, leading sprint planning and operations, designing and operationalizing a data quality framework, establishing foundational capabilities for MLOps, managing and continuously improving data architecture and pipelines, partnering closely with stakeholders, ensuring transparency into progress, guiding team members on developing data solutions, and managing and developing team members.

Skills and mindsets include demonstrating passion and commitment to KIPP's mission, self-management, work management, process management, problem-solving, people management and development, and technical proficiency in SQL, Spark, Pyspark, on-prem and cloud-based data platform management, CI/CD, ETL/data pipelines, version control, SSIS, agile sprint operations, project management tools, and machine learning principles.

Experience and qualifications include 8+ years of professional experience in data engineering, infrastructure engineering, or a closely related technical field, experience with SQL-based data platforms and modern cloud-based data warehouse/lakehouse platforms, demonstrated experience in managing agile sprint operations, DevOps metrics, and proficiency in JIRA, experience with version control and CI/CD workflows using Git and platforms, strong technical proficiency in SSIS, Spark, PySpark, and SQL, experience managing data platform operations and building/managing ETLs and pipelines, experience managing and mentoring data engineers, understanding of Machine Learning workflows and ML/AI enablement for data platforms, experience with SQL Server and MS Fabric/OneLake preferred, and a Bachelor's degree in data engineering, computer science, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.

Work conditions include low travel (10%) and a full, exempt role. The role is preferred, but not mandatory, to be based out of a KIPP Foundation office. This role also has the option of working from a remote office full-time. KIPP Foundation offices are in NYC and Chicago.
