Police Officer Position Summary: The Law Enforcement Officer I / Public Safety Officer provides law enforcement, security, and protection for the University of South Carolina community and property. Certified police officers in accordance with SC Code of Laws 23-6-430, empowered with full arrest and police authority statewide. Responsibilities include enforcing state laws and university rules and regulations. Responsibilities Patrol assigned area to prevent crime and detect violations; apprehend and arrest violators. Respond to complaints, reports of violations and requests for assistance. Keep records and make reports regarding all activities; assist with crime prevention measures and programs. Issue warnings and citations; investigate traffic accidents; direct traffic and control crowds. Testify in court and other proceedings in magistrate’s court. Process and document crime scenes; conduct surveillance and undercover assignments. Collect and present evidence for search and/or arrest warrants; assist dispatch operations. Perform other related duties as requested. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent; at least 21 years of age at hire. Certified law enforcement experience and/or one year of public safety or related experience. Required certification, licensure, or other credentials as per SC law. Knowledge of proper law enforcement behavior, modern techniques, evidence collection, legal rights, SC laws, university policies, and interagency relationships. Skill in operating law enforcement vehicles, weapons, and communication equipment. Pre‑employment drug and alcohol testing; post‑employment testing for safety‑sensitive positions. Schedule and Location Work Schedule: 28‑day rotating 12‑hour shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and some holidays. Hours per week: 40. Location: Beaufort County, SC. Salary and Benefits Starting pay range based on experience: $58,000 minimum (no experience) to $70,566 (5+ years certified law enforcement). Built‑in overtime up to $7,000. Take‑home vehicle. Uniform, duty shoes, outer protective vests provided at no cost. Free university tuition after six months of employment (up to four classes per year). Gym on campus; police officer retirement system. Special event pay. No college degree required. Paid parental leave. Professional development opportunities. 15 days vacation, 15 days sick leave, 13 paid holidays per year (including extended December holiday). State health, dental, vision options. Other Information Position attributes: Safety‑sensitive or security‑sensitive positions require pre‑employment and post‑employment drug testing. Hazardous weather category applicable.
