Charge Nurse - Lactation/Nutrition Consultant

About The Position This is advanced senior/lead-level professional nursing work addressing the health care needs of target populations (e.g., infants, youth, adults, and seniors) through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The position serves as a Charge Nurse within the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program and requires a Registered Nurse with formal training in nutrition science and current certification as an International Board-Ccertified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). The role provides professional nursing and health care services to clients, patients, families, and groups from diverse cultural backgrounds to promote health and wellness and prevent disease and disability. This position is considered essential. At this level, the position implements and manages work within an assigned program area and may function in one of three capacities: (1) as an advanced senior nurse providing advanced direct nursing services to a specific target population; (2) as a clinic charge nurse responsible for daily on-site management of public health clinics or facilities; or (3) as an assistant supervisor providing direct support to higher-level management staff through supervision and coordination of projects. The position requires frequent interaction with nursing, medical, and social services professionals to coordinate and deliver comprehensive health and nursing care programs. Work is performed in community settings, including homes, clinics, schools, and offices, and may involve exposure to infectious diseases. Work is evaluated through observation, record reviews, and employee-management conferences. About The Agency The Prince George's County Health Department (PGCHD) envisions all Prince Georgians being healthiest at every age and stage, and leads efforts toward disease prevention, health equity, and total well-being. The department operates with four divisions: Behavioral Health Services, Environmental Health and Disease Control, Family Health Services, and Health and Wellness, supported by administration and human resources. The mandate emphasizes protecting the public from health threats, promoting healthy living, and focusing on vulnerable populations while maintaining efficient internal processes. Examples of Work Provides advanced lactation care as an IBCLC while functioning as Charge Nurse to ensure appropriate triage, clinical decision making, and quality of care for breastfeeding participants. Coordinates and oversees local agency breastfeeding promotion and support activities, aligned with WIC program goals, public health priorities, and clinical standards of care. Serves as the lead clinical resource for breastfeeding care, triaging referrals, prioritizing high-risk cases, and assigning or coordinating services to appropriate staff. May exercise limited supervisory duties over subordinate staff. Plans and coordinates daily work activities of subordinate staff such as nurses, therapists, health aides, and clerical staff. Coordinates nursing/medical care services for clients/patients with other agencies/programs. Provides orientation, on-the-job training, and continuing education for supervised staff. Reviews and analyzes patient records for accuracy and completeness; takes action as needed. Serves on departmental and interagency committees, task forces, and boards; interprets policies for staff. Assists staff in determining nursing and mental health care needs of complex patients and in crisis resolution; assists in developing standards and procedures for service delivery and compliance. Triages referrals to determine urgency and assigns cases; collects and summarizes program data and submits required reports. Assists in budget development by providing narrative and statistical information. Willingly performs tasks within the general occupational category of the role. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or a related health field from an accredited program. Two (2) years of post-licensure community health nursing experience. Valid Registered Nurse license in Maryland issued by the Maryland State Board of Nursing at the time of appointment. Valid Class C driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle when required for job duties. Valid cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification at time of appointment. Any equivalent combination of relevant training, education, and experience may be considered. Please note there is no equivalency for the required certifications. Preferred Qualifications Formal training in nutrition science and current IBCLC certification. EPIC EMR experience.
