Sign Language Interpreter

Basic Function Under the direction of a Principal, perform translating, tutorial services and interpreting services for deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students; translate for students using appropriate manual and oral communications; perform clerical and supportive tasks for instructional personnel. Minimum Qualifications Education: Graduation from high school. Licenses and Other Requirements: Possession of a valid certificate with a score of level 4.0 or higher, issued by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or an equivalent certificate from a recognized evaluating agency. National Association of the Deaf (NAD) American Consortium of Certified Interpreters (ACCI) Educational Interpreter Performance Evaluation (EIPA) Educational Sign System Evaluation (ESSE) Demonstrated proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics at or exceeding that required for high school seniors as stated in the California Education Code 45344.5 (pending PC approval). Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of: Principles and practices of fingerspelling and signed English. Concerns and problems of deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Basic concepts of child growth and development, and developmental behavior characteristics of the hearing impaired. Basic subjects taught in District schools including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading. Child guidance principles and practices. Safe practices in classroom and playground activities. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Oral and written communication skills. Basic record‑keeping techniques. Operation of instructional and office equipment. Ability to: Translate language into visual signs utilizing oral communication, fingerspelling, sign language and other manual communication techniques. Read, understand and accurately interpret fingerspelling and signs of deaf and non‑verbal persons. Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward hearing‑impaired students. Communicate effectively in oral and written form, and using an appropriate manual communication language. Prepare instructional materials for the deaf and hard-of-hearing as directed by the teacher. Perform general clerical duties such as filing, duplicating and maintaining routine records. Provide instructional assistance to students in a variety of basic subjects. Operate assigned instructional and office equipment. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Physical Demands Dexterity of hands and fingers to sign and finger spell. Continuous use of elbows, shoulders, neck, back, lips and/or jaw. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Bending at the waist to assist students. Seeing to read a variety of materials and the sign language of others. Work Environment Classroom environment. General Essential Duties Assist students by translating a variety of instructional exercises and by presenting various instructional materials designed to enhance the learning process; translate instructional directions to students and enhance communication between student and teacher; interpret class lectures, class discussions, tests, assemblies and special ceremonies. Tutor and interpret for individual and small groups of deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students to reinforce and follow‑up instructional concepts utilizing sign language and manual communication techniques; assist students with study activities in carrying out the various aspects of their individual education plan. Prepare and assist in preparing, duplicating, and laminating a variety of instructional materials and learning aides. Maintain records related to assigned activities and students; report progress of students as assigned. Participate in parent conferences and IEP meetings as requested; provide sign to voice and voice to sign interpretations. Confer with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet individual student needs. Accompany and interpret for assigned students on field trips. Participate in meetings, conferences and in‑service training programs related to assigned activities. Operate a variety of instructional and office equipment. Perform related duties as assigned.
